They arrive in a clearing.

There's still some blood, but it's dry now.

Derek sniffs the air.

The kobold watches.

He seems unhappy with whatever he smells, because he kicks the ground a bit more than strictly necessary.

"No murderer here, not there. Cannot go go more go, needs to be here."

She looks confused.

"I no understand where murderer go. Is bad, I cannot help now. Maybe later."

She nods. "Home?"

"Home. Thank you."

And they go home.

Mmhmm.

She pokes around the kitchen looking for food for the two of them - she needs breakfast, and he should really have dinner.

Probably!

He has dinner. Peanut butter.

Weird human food. Okay.

She gives up when the cabinets turn out to be mostly empty, and pops back to her pantry cave for more jerky and dried fruit.

There's a knock at the door.

"Kobold want to meet someone?"

"Okay."

"Boyd. This is the kobold. They live here now."

"...Okay. Hi kobold. What's the kobold, exactly, some kind of weremouse?"

""Apparently, he's from very far away, and she is learning English. I should probably try to actually teach them."

"How much does it understand? Kobold, can you understand me? We teach you English."

She's been watching attentively. "I understand."

"He is called Derek. I call him Derek. You call him Derek. He calls himself Derek. He calls you kobold. I call myself Boyd. He calls me Boyd. You call me Boyd. You call yourself..?"

"I call myself kobold."

"You call yourself kobold, we call you kobold. I call this table," he says, pointing at the table.

He goes on to identify a chair, the carpet, the walls, the ceiling, and the floor.

"You understand?"

"Mmhmm," she nods, and repeats the new vocabulary back to him, gesturing to each thing with her nose and commenting on colors and textures where she has the vocabulary to do so.

It goes fairly well. Soon, she can identify furniture and wood and metal and bricks.

Boyd next attempts to explain artifical lighting.

"That is a light. It makes it bright or dark. Understand?"

Derek flips the switch to demonstrate.
