I want to thread a Jess finally damnit
Permalink

It was finally, finally time. Jessa was twelve Turns old. She was almost thirteen Turns old, really. She wasn't allowed to get to thirteen without touching dragon eggs, it wouldn't be fair.

(Seeing is another matter. But that's a secret.)

But now, finally, there were eggs on the Hatching Ground. Jessa hadn't even noticed that the most recent flight was a queen dragon and not a green, though in retrospect it must have been, for there to be eggs. (Jessa had found out recently exactly what happened during mating flights, and had felt very Worldly and Important ever since.) This clutch was supposed to be decently sized, even, which Jessa thought would work to their advantage; the smaller the clutch, the closer the eggs would be watched.

Not at all conducive to a group of Weyrbrats sneaking onto the sands to get a closer look.

The Weyr had no few 'brats near Jessa's age, but enough of them had gotten to see the last round of eggs that it wound up just Jessa, her best friend Jokanon, and their friend Mirnel (minus one other girl who'd lost her nerve at the last minute, to Jessa's disgust). And so, prepped with glowbaskets and carefully reviewed directions from the older 'brats, they headed down the old tunnels in search of the back entrance to the Hatching Ground.

Jessa and her friends had just rounded the bend of the first tunnel when they heard a voice Jessa really, really didn't want to hear.

"You invited her?" Mirnel sighed. "Jessa!"

"I didn't!" Jessa objected. "Ali, go away, you're going to get us caught!"

"I wanna see the eggs," Alianne said stubbornly. "That's where you're going, right?"

"Jessa," Mirnel hissed.

Jessa ignored him. "You can come back when you're older," she coaxed. "It's a 'brat tradition, everyone does it the Turn they're twelve."

Alianne narrowed her eyes. "You did it before."

Jessa attempted to look innocent, but Alianne knew her too well. "I've never touched a dragon egg."

"See? But you've been!"

"Is so!" Alianne considered for a minute. "If you don't take me, I'll tell," she threatened.

"Shard it, Ali, that's not fair! Go back and be quiet, you can sneak out to see the eggs when you are twelve like you're supposed to," Jessa snapped.

Alianne stared back mutinously. "You've done it too. You're my sister and you're supposed to help me!"

"Half sister," Jessa muttered.

"For Faranth's sake, Jessa," Jokanon sighed. "Just bring her, as long as she's quiet, we can't keep standing here or one of the riders will catch us."

"And we'll be on kitchens duty till we're dead," Mirnel agreed glumly.

"Fine," Jessa said shortly. "But you will be the quietest Weyrbrat of all time, understood?"

"Yes, Jessa," Alianne said, smugly obedient in her victory.

The group of now-four continued their winding way through the tunnels. The deeper they got, the mustier the tunnels became, the less well tended the floor. Jessa was keeping her glowbasket as covered as she could in case someone were to spot them. Alianne gamely followed along, trying desperately not to sneeze as the dust got thicker.

The gap in the wall was right where they were expecting it to be, and just as small. Jessa gulped when she saw it. It had only been a couple Turns, and yet it already looked so much smaller.

Mirnel nudged Jessa as she got closer. "Bet you a bubbly pie you can't get your chest through," he smirked.

"Hey now," Jokanon said, in his most disapproving voice.

Alianne managed to suppress her giggle... mostly.

Jessa did not bother to respond. She just punched him in the chest.

That taken care of, she sized up the opening against her new figure. It looked like she'd be fine... barely.

"Owwwww," Mirnel moaned, only just remembering to keep his voice down.

"You deserved that," Jokanon observed.
