"Melissa, how illegal is this going to be?"

"She might need an identity. I'm trying not to think about it while I'm standing next to a cop."

"Talk to Stiles about it, don't give me the details. I'll help her get situated in terms of housing, if she goes for something more permanent."

He heads back inside.

"Ready? I can show you around town, get some extra food for you."

"Sure, that'd be great. Take your time about deciding on the blessings, no pressure. What would I need an identity for, and why would it be illegal?"

"The government records people and their identities so that no one can use anyone else's identity to steal their authority or their power or their wealth. Manufacturing an identity would make it easier for you to do lots of things, but since you weren't born in this country, the most convenient way of doing this is to break the law."

"I'm guessing there's not a lot of precedent for people who appear out of thin air?"

"Snakes with mirror faces are uncommon here too."

"My god couldn't find a single written reference to one being seen before now. Which, goddess of libraries, you know her search was thorough."

"Okay. First thing, I take you home. Have you ever been in a car? What's your world like?"

She leads Pascale to her car.

"I have not been in a car before! How do they work? We have horses and carts and boats and so forth for transportation, most people just walk."

"Cars...work. They have a very flammable substance in them that they burn for power, which lets them move somehow."

They arrive at Melissa's car, and she opens the passenger side door for her.

"Huh! That's interesting."

That's clearly a chair there, she's supposed to sit down it it? Okay.

"Okay, good so far. Now, do you see next to you, that strap of...cloth-like stuff hanging there, with the metal bit hanging on? That's the seatbelt. On the other side of the seat, down here, is where the metal part goes. Mind if I reach over and do it for you?"

"I think I can get it..." It only takes a bit of fiddling to draw the seatbelt across her body and snap it into place.

"Kind of restrictive," she remarks.

"If you haven't seen a car in motion yet, you're about to, and it's generally useful for surviving any unwanted and accidental crashes."

She sits in the driver's seat.

"The noise is kind of loud."

She starts the car.

"Yeah, I've seen them moving around."

So they go.

"Do you have major questions already that I can answer, or should we tell each other what our worlds are like?"

"My acolyte status requires my first question to be about the existence and location of libraries."

"There is a public library in town. We can stop there now, I don't need to get home for another hour or so."

"Could we? That'd be great!"

So they arrive at the public library.

Melissa leads her inside.

The most notable thing might be the limited selection and the computers.

Looks like a respectable number of books to Pascale. She determines the location of the nonfiction section, and begins pulling books off the shelf one at a time, flicking through each quickly before replacing it.
