Nine in Beacon Hills

Just another normal day for an acolyte of Ellayania, moving from town to town, answering questions and dealing with problems. Pascale's pretty used to the routine by now, and she enjoys it. Always seeing new places, solving whatever local crises she happens across. Today when she woke up her goddess informed her that there was an unknown creature traveling across the landscape a couple miles out of town, so she's going to investigate that. It's... unusual for a creature to appear and Ellayania to not know what it is. Pascale's not sure what to make of that.

After some walking and occasional whispered directional updates, she catches sight of the creature. It's some kind of large snake thing? With a... mirror for a head? What?

She's still staring in puzzlement when, faster than she can react, it charges over to her and swallows her in one gulp.

Ellayania notes the sudden disappearance of her acolyte with some alarm. Quickly, she drops the snake-creature into a pit and seals over the earth above it.

Pascale? Are you still alive?

"Yeah, I'm here, that thing just ate me, but I'm okay. Um. But I'm not in your domain anymore."

Where is she?

She is at the edge of a forest. Not too far off she can see a road. It's not made of dirt or stone, but something else, and painted with yellow and white markings.

In the distance, she can see a town.

Deeper into the forest, if she can and does look, is a large house.

"Seems to be some kind of forest? Not one of our neighbors."

Indeed not. Be cautious.

"Aren't I always?"

If there was a god here, they would have already noticed her. Since she hasn't been addressed, she'll have to find out where she is from other sources. The town's probably a good bet, and doesn't look too far away. She starts following the road in that direction.

Here's a car, zooming past her!

And another.

Whoa!

She jumps out of the way. Good thing she was towards the side of the road and not the middle. Those... things seem altogether too fast to be reasonably safe. She will switch to walking by the side of the road, rather than actually on it.

And in time, she arrives.

She can try aiming for the residential or commercial areas, if she can tell the difference.

Commercial would probably be better, probably easier to find someone to talk to there. It's likely to be denser than residential districts and busier. Do those criteria help her find it?

They do!

Here's a grocery store, here's a school, here's a veterinarian's office, here's a bowling alley, here are some warehouses.

Any temples?

Does a church count?

Probably not. It's not very big, and there's not really an indication that it's a temple.

Pascale has one vial of holy water on a necklace, she takes it out of her shirt and Ellayania translates signs for her.

She doesn't expect a town not in any god's domain would have any big temples, this church is probably the closest she'll get. Is it open to visitors right now?

It is! No one really seems to be going in or out, but there are cars parked outside.

Which might help her.

She's worked out that they're a form of transportation. Which means there's probably people inside. To the door, then!

To the door!

There are some people inside.

It's mostly quiet. Very solemn, and the only place to put offerings seems to be in the front, where people are placing green paper.

A very serious sort of god, then.

...Pascale doesn't actually have any appropriate offerings on her. She'll just sort of wait over to the side for a break in whatever ceremonies they're doing.

There is apparently such a break happening right now.

The solemnity seems confined to the sitting people.

Those standing by the table with food and drinks are quiet, but much less restrained.

One of them spots her and waves.

She waves back, and goes over to join them.

"Hi. I'm new to the area, I was wondering if you could tell me where I am?"

An astute observer paying close attention might notice that the sound they hear is actually coming from her necklace, rather than her mouth.

The astute observers are either sitting quietly or not paying close attention it would seem.

"The town of Beacon Hills, southern California. How'd you make your way here?"

Pascale has never heard of a nation called California. And a quick skim through her mental library turns up no references to something called that either. Okay. She is officially Very Far From Home.

"Sort of by accident? It's kind of a weird story." Probably best not to lead with giant mirrorsnakes, at least until she knows more. "It's a lovely town. My name's Pascale, what's yours?"

"Pascale, huh? I've never heard it before. I'm Melissa."
