They are eventually interrupted by Nayoki's arrival, and the resulting impetus for Joshel to take her and Leareth off to meet privately.

Nayoki looks at Leareth for a long moment.

Not now.

...They can go off and talk financial terms for their alliance, then.

And Seldan will determine where Cicerone Raad is right now.

(He wonders what the clerics in Haven think is going on right now. It sounds like they were hauled here last night with minimal explanation other than "Leareth needs more Restorations" which is not a great story for grabbing both sixth-circle clerics and one of the fifth-circles. And then this morning they've been kind of just...told to wait to further orders in Haven, despite the obvious ongoing emergency elsewhere, which if he were in their shoes would be confusing and prompt some speculation.)

Raad is hanging out in his assigned quarters playing some kind of elaborate betting game with some of the other Abadarans and he can interrupt it to go attend them!

"Cicerone, hello. At what rate would you be willing to instruct me in the proper handling of confidential information? I've thus far failed to be catechized in it."

"The youngsters are cheaper and probably nearly as competent, especially if you want the generic Law and nothing specific to Abadar."

"Do any of them speak Taldane, or will my Companion need to translate?"

"I think Sabir has it well enough for the purpose."

So Blai will extract Cicerone Sabir from the herd and agree to pay him and get his lesson.

Seldan is technically not in the room for it, because Valdemaran architecture continues to be a little less Companion-friendly than one might hope, but this doesn't actually present an obstacle to riding along in Blai's head with live commentary.

He continues to really appreciate how careful Golarion culture is about - he's not sure exactly how to convey the difference - not accidentally misrepresenting what you mean? It stands out in the way they make it explicit that "I promise not to tell anyone" isn't a commitment to, for example, be a perfect actor and avoid giving anything away if it comes up later by reacting exactly as you would if you didn't know the information. It's not that people do expect confidentiality to cover that in Velgarth, it's just - not discussed, so if someone promised to keep a secret and then leaked that they knew it by making a face in public, a charitable person would discount it as "well, obviously he wasn't promising not to do that, no one means it like that" while an uncharitable person could easily construe it as "he was intending to screw me over like that all along, the bastard." It makes sense as a downstream effect of Law being a distinct concept from Good, and it's neat!

It's also neat that there are higher levels of confidentiality than just "I won't tell anyone or reveal that a secret exists and I know it." Promising not to use information against someone's interests even in ways that wouldn't count as revealing it to someone else is a neat idea! And seems like it could be relevant to the Heralds' concerns about the current specific secret, he'll definitely be flagging that to Joshel and Dara. Of course there are a pile of caveats about that, too, but there really should be for anything that expansive.

...The concept of making a habit of always replying "not that I'm permitted to disclose" to questions about whether you know about a blah blah blah you received information on confidentially is great. This is admittedly half because Seldan thinks it would be really funny and annoy people, but it's also a good idea! It's the best way of annoying people, really, when it's also a good idea.

It's a very soothing lesson, at least if you are Blai, to get confirmation that over the course of history enough people have tried enough things that how things fit together and meet Lawfully is understood and how to teach it is well-rehearsed, that there is a standard language behind it and standard layers of checks and assurances.

Now, what level of confidentiality is he going to want from Raad about the diamond information? (For example, is Raad allowed to short the diamond market.)

Seldan feels like the ideal here - that Joshel would want to ask for but isn't sure if it would be weird or rude or obviously not done or something - is that they agree to go in with Valdemar on shorting the diamond market? Seldan doesn't feel like the thing that would be "only using the information in Valdemar's interests" is committing to not shorting the diamond market, just - not going off and doing it in a way that Valdemar can't participate in or benefit from because their access to Golarion and context on it is so limited?

Hmmm. What does Imaginary Fiducia Boian say to that.

Imaginary Fiducia Boian says that the asset the Valdemarans bring to the table - or, no, not the Valdemarans, the aspirational Valdemaran-Leareth bloc, Leareth is needed to invent the spell and should have a stake in the results even if only Vanyel can cast it - is the means of production and the thing they want is capital, and that the church of Abadar can provide capital but is only incentivized to do so if they expect a return on investment. This might look like "going in together" - certainly it looks more like that than does Vanyel autonomously dropping diamonds on a market the Abadarans have independently shorted - but "going in together" on shorting the market is not really a thing, Blai doesn't know exactly how shorting markets works so Imaginary Boian is mumbling a bit here but it's something like a bet on the future price and Valdemar can't cover that bet right now even if it's really confident and "I can't cover this bet but I'm really confident" is exactly the sort of thing every institution will have found out how to fence out. If Vanyel were instead of a person some kind of irreplaceable magical equipment maybe the church would want to own shares. Blai does not know if you can own shares in a guy and thinks if you can if might be concerningly slavery-esque, he's pretty sure that slavery is at least endangerment towards Evil even if it's not inherently Evil all by itself. So what would it be like to own shares in a guy without that. They'd want to establish some kind of business? For the church to buy shares in? Which in practice basically is Vanyel - maybe Vanyel with an agreement that he cannot skip out on the business and establish a different diamond-making business, some kind of noncompete agreement with himself - he's starting to run out of Imaginary Fiducia Boian at this point.
