"Ren - uh, my mother - told me once that the ASL sign for 'Canada' is a lot like the one for 'sorry'."

"That tracks."

"It's better than many of the older signs for various countries that were based on physical features of the population."

"I'd believe it. I don't actually know any sign language, Ren's jut a fountain of fun facts and I retain some of them."

"I can fingerspell and I know like, maybe five-ten actual signs but that's it."

"You wanna teach me to fingerspell?"

"Sure!"

Once dinner's wrapped up she can start going through the alphabet with him.  Erring on the side of taking his hand and repositioning it herself way more than she would with anyone else.

That's very helpful of her. Also it makes anything he thinks of to say take up more time, which under the circumstances is plausibly desirable.

"LSQ - Langue des signes québécoise - uses the same alphabet, though it's largely a different language otherwise.  In case you need to fingerspell French.  People do different things for the accents; with loanwords in an otherwise English context you might just skip them, some people draw them in the air - either above or below the letter immediately after signing it, as you would in writing, some leave them to the end of the word -"  And he can get into the details of what groups of people tend to do these things and when.

That's really helpful and interesting! Haru will practice all the options as they are mentioned so as to be Participating.

Xavier's somewhat more restrained than Ari about correcting Haru's errors, despite apparently being more knowledgeable.  He tends to demonstrate differences himself while describing the difference verbally, and occasionally slips in a, "May I?" before making an adjustment.

"OOOOOOOOK," Ari says and signs simultaneously, after a while.  "I'm going to retire, even though it's really early.  To bed.  Or like at least to my laptop."

"Pleasant dreams."

"Thanks."  She signs that one, too.

"How are you feeling?" Xavier wonders, pulling Haru in.  "Within the bounds of current possibility."

"Fine, pretty much, I know the ASL alphabet now. We'll see how much I've retained in the morning."

"Indeed.  When do you think you'll want to bed down for the night?  It's about 9:30, now."

"I usually go to bed at around ten, my sleep schedule right now is afflicted with dimensional travel and also nap but nine thirty is a fine time to start wending generally bedwards."

"Then let's begin."

He reprises his position on the bed for Haru to change back into pajamas, and then steers Haru into that spot to do the same.

"Do you wanna be the big spoon?" Haru mumbles when it's too quiet.

"I'm fine with it, if that's what you prefer."

"I think it works a little bit better but not dramatically so or anything."

Then they can spoon-stack in that configuration.

"Have people in this timeline always known how to knock each other out without doing brain damage," yawns Haru.

"Hmm... I'd say no; it does take some skill.  But the oldest techniques I've heard of are more ancient than modern."
