"Oh, you get a witch outfit as a rank zero Witchery effect. Robe and hat and also rod - staff or wand etcetera. More ranks jazzes it up. And you are taking the one where you must have a prop to do magic, so you will probably want to jazz yours, and once they are jazzy there is less and less reason to wear other things if you do not have to."

"Can't I just use the wand without the outfit? What benefits does the outfit provide? It seems like 'jazzy' implies being able to change how it looks, so can't I change it to look like normal human clothes?"

"If you wish you can summon your mothergifts - that's what they are called because they are from our mutual ancestress a longass time ago - and then promptly ditch the hat and robe and just carry your wand, sure. At rank zero it is not a great outfit, though if you are not a clothes horse you can get someone with more ranks to tweak it for you into your wear the same thing daily like a cartoon character uniform. At rank one, you can turn your rod into a broomstick, and you can spend ten minutes re-designing your stuff how you'd like it, which takes less time than buying a new dress but more than throwing one on from your closet. The broom keeps getting faster and more fully-featured, with more ranks, the clothes keep getting more convenient and easier to update, your hat turns into a bag of holding turns into a whole pocket dimension. I have not worn anything not mothergifty that wasn't magical or shoes in many years."

"Didn't you say before that when you have the affinity for something, the first rank is free? Do Academics have the affinity for witchery?"

"First rank is in fact better than free!"

"So then why would no veil be an issue clothes-wise if I can just make them look like normal clothes? Also, hey, question, if for some reason I wanted to be naked but still count as wearing the garment, could I turn it into, like, a single bracelet or headband or something?"

"Takes two ranks to have them in more than one piece, so you would be going commando, unless you add underthings after putting on the robe or you have enchanted ones. I cannot think of a reason you need to count as wearing your garment but if you want to turn it into a bracelet nothing would at that point stop you. Headband wouldn't work, the hat doesn't like company."

"Bold of you to assume I'm not already going commando."

"I did not check! If this is how you roll then you have less reason to rank up witchery."

"Pocket dimension doesn't sound bad, though. And presumably higher ranks make the broom go faster. If one rank lets you change it in ten minutes, presumably two ranks is instantaneous or close to it, what does three to five get for the garment?"

"Two ranks is one minute and they are magically appropriate to any weather, self-cleaning, quick-drying, and self-repairing; three is instant appearing and altering; four makes them an invisibility garment; five makes the garment work as a portal to your pocket dimension same as your hat can."

"Ooh, invisibility sounds useful! Glad I'm an Academic!"

"Four ranks for you is four points! Do you want them now or reconsider after we have gone through all the complications?"

"Yeah, let's stick to Complications for now."

"Unveiled, yea or nay?"

"At four points, I don't think it's worth it, given how the masquerade is a serious deal. Actually wait, shit, if I took it then gaining hundreds of pounds overnight would definitely be a masquerade violation. Yeah, pass."
