There's loads of rumors. It's fairly difficult to tell what's true and what isn't. People are reacting in a myriad of ways. They're scared of Cheliax and House Ornelos. They're worried about what war could do to the city. Some of the nobility are engaged in power struggles. Not everyone wants the head of their house back. Et cetera.

Mostly she has a feel for it, and can give more specific answers to questions when they come up. Now, her first meetings were scheduled for lunch, because she doesn't need to patrol today. It's about that time.

She is, of course, the first to arrive. Yes they will be eating in a Mirror Hideaway today, yes she paid the reservation surcharge in advance. (It's substantial, but not that substantial. She eats lunch late, a Hideaway lasts three to five hours, and they need to have enough for all the meetings which are happening at once during more standard lunch times.)

Aline arrives soon after. She's in a somber mood. Her father was killed at the summit. He should be resurrected sometime in the next couple of days.

The other people Tencednil invited also arrive. Many of them have lost family members. There's a diverse variety of reactions to the recent events.

Permalink

She greets people as they enter, makes sure the space is full (unfortunately there isn't space for Lhín when they have a waiter, but she can stay in while the waiter is away to ensure nobody else can sneak in), and opens with some of the more boring and anticipated whispers in the city.

With careful phrasings and well-selected rumors, she can make sure they keep hearing about the errors and mis-management of one of the deceased heads, as well as some of the more unpleasant maneuvers being made to force his raising. A few mentions of what else could be done with that money, some nudges towards thinking of this as a tradeoff rather than just a loss...

A few markers are called in, including the recent Vianu debt, by some of the people who disliked him more than the rest of his house. They end the meeting with quite a bit of noble power aligned behind his heir's attempt to keep power rather than having him raised. It might not work, but this is the best chance. And having that house's head in debt to her for managing this would definitely be a good thing.

The next meeting is much like the first. Tencednil might not be very experienced with political maneuvering, but she makes up for it with raw charisma.

Soon enough, afternoon becomes evening which becomes night.

Permalink

One last meeting over dinner, this one mostly just to exchange information and maintain alliances. She doesn't need a Hideaway this time. It's just to reassure everyone that just because they're thrust into positions of importance doesn't mean they need to cut their prior friendships, and to remember to reach out. Probably nothing will come of it.

And eventually back home. Mother only cast one Raise Dead today, presumably due to diamond supply. She was still paid well, for that and the Restorations several nobles were looking for afterwards. She sounds happier about the chances of avoiding Chelish rule — the raised heads must have been pretty clear about their opinions. Tencednil is still on notice, but she now has permission to relax a little more. They might still need to run urgently, but it has gotten substantially less likely.

And, finally, to sleep.

OLD KORVOSA GANG ACTIVITY LOWER THAN EXPECTED

Some things change and some things stay the same. Nothing seems to have happened on the international political front yesterday. The papers are back to more reasonable local news. The nobility won't be meeting again until the heads have been resurrected or inherited. House Ornelos has promised to tighten security. One hopes they will be successful.

Back to patrolling, mostly. She does make sure to keep reviewing her notes, and ensures she has everything relevant memorized. She does.

That night, Mother says they need to talk in depth.

Permalink

<You are of interest to Ulon. You know this. You remember what you were taught about being of interest to deities?>

Permalink

<It is always a bad idea and I should avoid it whenever possible?>

Permalink

<Not the important part. Interactions.>

Permalink

She pauses.

Forgetting things is expected. Pretending to know something you don't means you fail pointlessly.

<No.>

Permalink

Nod.

<Communication with a deity mostly takes place via Commune. It can instead occur via visions, which are less limited in their communication. A vision is also a terrible experience. Gods do not fit in your head. Little can be done about this. Your first time is still the worst.>

Permalink

Ah, she sees where this is going.

<And you have received a vision?>

Permalink

<Once. The spell to share it is not a cleric spell, so we will be sparing. It can still be acquired. Hold yourself open. I am conveying more than this spell is meant to take. it would be trivial to resist.>

Permalink

Hesitantly, she does.

Mother pulls out a scroll.

Mindlink.

aaaagh that is not supposed to fit in ten minutes

The impossible pain wears away over time. After a few hours, it's only a horrible headache, one which fortunately does not impede Tencednil's ability to fall asleep. It will still be bad in the morning, but less so. Hopefully.

NOBILITY LIKELY TO AMEND CHARTER FOR INDEPENDENCE

Cheliax has issued an official proclamation claiming that the government of Korvosa did a variety of unlawful things. Mass murder, destruction of property, rebellion, et cetera. A large faction of the nobility have issued their own statement essentially calling Infernal Cheliax an invalid country and claiming that Korvosa hasn't been part of Cheliax since it was destroyed in the civil war. The diplomatic relationship between Cheliax and Korvosa is effectively over. There's also more local news. None of it is particularly interesting.

She's... better. It is not a good day. She can call Lhín to go and read the newspaper, and pull out her notes to make sure she remembers everything there. She will not be going out into the brightness of the sun or anywhere with loud noises today. If it was really necessary, she probably could in maybe another three or four hours. It would be unpleasant. For now... she can cast clearly enough to call up Lhín and she can walk down when she is dragged by Lhín. (And eat. Eating should help.) That will have to do.

ACADAMAE STUDENTS ON RELEASE FOR BREACHING FESTIVAL

The spring rains have been unusually long. You can hear them flow down off the roofs and into the gutters on the street, if you're listening. A Chelixian trade galleon bound from Corentyn pulled into the dock at Midland this morning. In two days, the gates of the Acadamae will open to outsiders for the exhibition. Dark things move in the Vaults beneath the earth. Last night, there was a tragic accident involving two house drakes, a careless wizard, and a walking mushroom.

So, nothing particularly out of the ordinary for this time of year.
