"Losing my sight...it's not the thing I'm most afraid of, but it definitely falls under the heading 'Nightmare Scenario.'"

"Maybe somebody'd lose an arm instead. A foot, even, if they thought they could make it to you before something got them that way. Could be lots of things. If you let on.

"I'll try the thing."

She gently pushes him a bundle of enhanced sensory traits. Enhanced hearing, which she needed a divination spell to discover on account of soundboard. Night vision, fog vision. And a really souped-up improvement to regular vision; greater detail, greater range, even slightly better color discernment. Hopefully, a damaged version of that is at least as good as regular human vision.

"- oh. Oh that's so - can I have something written to look at -"

She's so tempted by so many things that would be bad ideas but it isn't actually difficult to push past them to pull out a copy of a novel she read at one point.

He frowns at it. "...it's going to take practice to learn to read again," he sighs. "But I think there's enough detail there."

"Do you think it would help to learn Braille? I don't know how much is available in Braille here."

"I think that'd be slower and also as far as I know nothing is available in Braille here. If I couldn't see when it was time to induct me - it wouldn't've been worth it, they'd have sold my slot and gotten something nice to send my sister in with."

Nod. "If I copy something that has regeneration we can try that."

"Thank you - so much -" The freckles are gone now.

"You're welcome."

She doesn't say: Everyone here has horrifyingly low standards and I am going to drag them upwards kicking and screaming.

She doesn't say: My actual greatest nightmare scenario is being alone; the one thing above all I value more than seeing-and-knowing is human connection, the choice to be kind to another person because they're there and you can

She does say: "Do you want to head back out now, or would you rather eat in here?"

He casts a wistful and slightly crosseyed look at the surroundings. "I'll go back out, thank you."

She puts him back in the cafeteria.

Students continue to move through the queue, making occasional requests (broccoli in cheese sauce? milkshakes? salt and pepper tofu?) till the meal is over.

She can do all of these things! Though she has never had salt and pepper tofu specifically, so she has to ask a couple of questions so she doesn't make a stupid mistake on that one.

It's not complicated and the student can recite the entire recipe if that helps!

Wonderful! Here is salt and pepper tofu with no embarrassing English interpretations!

Hallelujah!

After dinner she goes to take a nap in preparation for another night of mal-slaying. She talks to her parents and hands out mal-derived powers and has hugs.

While she's obliterating mals that night, her inside-pocket self creates signup sheets and figures out how to put them up in a way that's accessible.

In the morning when she goes up to distribute breakfast, she pulls a big freestanding corkboard out of her pocket dimension, with "KAREEN MAGNUS POCKET DIMENSION STUDY GROUP SIGN-UPS" pinned to the top, and various sheets of paper covering the rest of it. Each sheet has a couple of different time slots on it, over the course of the next week, as well as the primary language and theme if applicable. A plurality are in English or Mandarin, but there are also slots labeled as being primarily intended to be in French, Hindi, Cantonese, Japanese, and other languages. The themed ones are relatively few, and all in either English or Mandarin; one of them is "I can produce sirenspider shell let's make musical instruments." One is "brainstorming more nice things that people would like to have." One is "does anyone want to try to convince the school to give them a lost language like Minoan or Wiriná, I can magically speak those, there is some interesting shit written in them."

"Spanish is also a big language," Bella tells her. "The big four in here are English Mandarin Spanish and Hindi."

"Oh, good to know." She finds some slots that nobody has signed up for yet and changes them to Spanish.

Bella puts herself down for a couple slots.

Most people do. El gives people space but she doesn't not sign up for freely open study hall in a safe pocket dimension.

Good! If El allowed herself to be excluded Kareen would have to rethink her approach.

Instead people who recognize the name are self-sorting on how well they can tolerate that!
