"Oh, students have to clean and repair the school, we all get an assignment every week. The enclavers hire theirs out."

"Oh, that makes sense. I guess I had been assuming that the school just maintained itself, by magic."

"It does some of that, but it does it with mana it gets putting us to work, and I guess we'd have to do twice as many essays or something, if it tried to do all of it like that."

"Maybe maintenance assignments will get easier now that I'm dumping mana from duplicated crystals into the school all the time. We can hope."

"Maybe, though if it starts having two people clean each bathroom instead of one I have to deal with company."

"That is a potential downside, yep." If El ever visits Kareen's home dimension and any Lukas lays so much as a wisp of mist on her head Kareen is going to destroy them. "...Wait, are you normally alone for these? Is that safe?"

"Oh, no, it's quite normal to double up, clean two rooms or fix two batches of furniture or something with two people, but that way you pick and choose who."

"Oh good. I'm trying to learn not to underestimate the ways you can get fucked over in this place."

"Most of the things we never do, you could do a hundred times and be fine, and if someone came in and started doing that they'd be dead before Field Day."

Unless they're Orion Lake, apparently. "Is that a significant marker?"

"It's a major calendar event, as they go, and there's more mals after it because the numbers go up steadily through term."

"I'm guessing it's a leftover from when the school was less unsafe."

"What I've heard is that it's so we all have to go appreciate the gym, which was very expensive, but perhaps it's also that."

"Okay but what if Orion Lake and I appreciate the gym enough for everyone."

"I don't think you will prevent the next Field Day, it's not like it was the school's own idea."

"No, I didn't really think so. When is Field Day?"

"After midterms."

"So this year's is over and it's not anything anyone has to worry about until I had really better have done something about the graduation hall anyway."

"Cheers," laughs El.

"I'm already proper bullshit now, after only a few days with these powers. Who knows what I'll be by then?" 

"You might hit diminishing returns."

"I'm sure I'll hit diminishing returns in terms of Dragon Fairy Elf Witch, but think how many more spells I'll have learned by then!"

"Anyway, I should run along."

Kareen catches Gail at dinner. "Hey, I met an alchemist who had a short-term anti-anxiety potion that'll work mixed with juice, I think this might be relevant for party purposes."
