"Hooray!"

The mysterious puzzle structure is built into a little cave. There's some kind of enormous structure on the floor, with a few stone slabs with runes on them embedded into it empty depressions suitable for more of the same. Four enormous statues of something like winged lions, but with distinctly un-leonine faces are positioned in the corners. Runes have been carved into the walls, and large ceramic vases ring the outer edges of the wall.

A puzzle! Time to investigate those vases!

"......Maybe check for traps before you do that?"

"I am checking for traps! By investigating this vessel, I will almost certainly discover whether it is trapped."

"He means, I expect, that it would be better to find out in a way other than by experiencing the trap."

She considers this. "That seems like it would provide less information about the nature of the traps."

"You won't have any information about the traps if you're dead."

Thall has put a Detect Magic up and is looking around the room. "—The vases don't detect, at least. The thing on the floor does, conjuration and divination. There's divination magic on the eyes of the statues, not the same as what's on the floor."

"Conjuration like it might summon something or like it might teleport us, can you tell?"

He squints at it. "I think the former. ...Also, there are a lot of inefficiencies here — Nenio, do you know when people figured out that they could shorten the planar distances for a summoning by adapting the search procedure?"

"That first became public in 3514 in Absalom when the tower of the great gnomish wizard Leedi exploded and some of his notes uncovered. However, it is believed to have been discovered several times previously by wizards who did not make their work public."

"About what circle of summon?"

"Third, but with some extra loops I've never seen before, so it might be stronger than usual."

"These vessels appear to contain large stone slabs similar to the ones already inlaid in the floor! Unfortunately, they are too heavy for me to lift them."

"At least they didn't blow you up?"

"Is there in fact a puzzle here or just a summon trap?"

"The stone slabs appear to have symbols on them! I expect that we are supposed to arrange them in the correct positions in the floor. If you assist me by retrieving them from these vessels I will direct you as to where to place them."

"Let me get this straight, you want us to help you put a bunch of rocks with weird symbols in the middle of a summoning circle?"

"It is not a summoning circle, paladin girl. If you look at the floor the indented spaces quite clearly form a square."

"What would be the point of setting this up - if it's a trap it should be easier than that to set off by mistake and if it's supposed to be a convenience for someone who wanted routine summonses it shouldn't be too hard for a caster to lift."

"Nenio's pretty weak even for a caster, maybe whoever set it up was stronger?"

"Perhaps it was intended as a test of cleverness and a test of physical strength combined."

"Sounds like something from a story, not something that would actually happen."
