What befell the dragons?

For, indeed, few if any of those majestic beasts can be found in the skies near the Inner Sea, nor in its fields, swamps, coasts, or even forests. This is to the great dismay of the humble researcher, who is forced to turn their inquiry from the nature of these beasts to the lesser question of the reasons behind their absence -- and if, of course, they may someday return.

I expressed, with some indignation, that I was not worried for myself, but for the dragons. Their loss would be (I dearly hoped had not already been) a great blow to the systematic study of magical beasts.

I hadn't even finished the first half of my argument before being bodily ejected from the opera box. So terribly rude.
