but she sure has an aura

She should probably figure out what to do about the obvious maleficer in History of Maleficing.

On the one hand, the maleficer might try to murder her. On the other hand, if she doesn't do anything, the maleficer is going to keep maleficing, and the longer she waits, the harder it'll be for her to go clean.

Briar looks around, making sure there are still enough people nearby to notice if the maleficer tries to kill her, then walks over to her, trying to remember what she'd said to the one at orientation.

"Hi. You know, it's not too late to go clean. If you want. It's basically the safest time of the year for it."

"Gosh, really? Do you have scented shampoo? If I need to get clean I'd like to do it before the amphisbaena hatch."

Okay, this is probably going to be harder than last time. She takes a deep breath, and lowers her voice.

"No, I mean, clean from maleficing."

El inspects her fingernails. "I'll pass it on if I meet any maleficers."

Maybe the creepy maleficer girl thinks she's stupid, or something.

"If it's not changing someone's appearance yet it's easier for them to go clean."

"That's backwards. The farthest-gone look normal."

"What I heard was that it takes some time for it to mess up your body at all. Then you get the nails, and the hair, and then eventually you start being able to -- look normal --"

Maybe she's implying that she's already so far gone with maleficing that there's no hope for her? That's terrifying. She's a freshman.

"Oh, excuse me, I thought you were making me late to my next class because you thought I was curdling beneath my skin, eaten away by the tortured animas of a hundred adorable woodland creatures and carrying a snow-white calf in my bookbag for emergencies! You're hassling me because you think I briefly dabbled and have one hamster on my conscience and might yet release my petting zoo to make their way in the halls of the Scholomance living on our abundant bloody flora and you think you could tell from across the room? Really? Is your affinity being a daft bint?"

"Only maleficing a little bit doesn't make it not bad!"

"Whereas if you're only a daft bint occasionally on your cheat day that's your perfect right, I'm sure. I've a class. Probably you have one too, unless the Scholomance determined you were in need of an independent study on minding your own business. I hear those assignments are the worst to be eaten by, study hard." And off she sweeps.

Well, that was terrifying.

Briar is not totally sure what to do about this! She had plans for what to do if the creepy maleficer girl tried to kill her, and she had plans for what to do if she decided to give up maleficing, but it hadn't occurred to her to plan for her literally just walking away.

Well, they're going to have plenty of additional History of Maleficing class sessions. Maybe she can come up with something helpful to say during class.
