Svetka tilts her face up towards the Darkling, lips slightly parted, gazing shyly at her.

Small, knowing smile.

Mrrr she doesn't want to be smiled at, she wants to be kissed.

Smirk.

Mean! Pout.

Pet pet.

Svetka is definitely not emotionally ready to be the one to initiate a kiss, so she will just enjoy the pets and keep any hypothetical grumbling strictly to the inside of her head.

It's possible the Darkling is picking up on the hypothetical grumbling. Just possible.

Svetka will carefully not consider that possibility. It would be too embarrassing.

The Darkling will keep petting her while she doesn't think of it, then.

That's a pretty okay second place.

She's glad.

Svetka's pretty much going to stay here until suppertime.

The Darkling pulls a book over to herself, reading while continuing to pet Svetka's hair.

She doesn't make Svetka move before supper - though she does start reading out loud in a low voice. It seems to be a narrative of the life of Sankt Ilya, though one Svetka hasn't heard yet - this particular excerpt is focused around Morozova's Stag (and around how Sankt Ilya is first chained, of course).

The Darkling has a really soothing voice.

Hopefully Svetka is learning things while she's being soothed.

Absolutely. She's a sponge for learning and the Darkling is rudely refusing to distract her with kisses.

Wonderful.

Definitely food for thought, this story.

The descriptions of Ilya's collar are very vivid, aren't they?

Vivid's a good word for it. She doesn't remember Ilya's bindings being so heavy, or the villagers' punishments so... detailed.

The tales do vary a good bit. But the rhythm is overall the same: Ilya angering the village, who bind him with ropes that chafe as they debate his fate. How they leave him to shiver in the cold night. Morozova's stag freeing him on the next dawn - and the villagers capturing him again, binding him with a collar of heavy iron and humiliating him...

Three nights Ilya suffers, three dawns he's freed, three days he's recaptured and bound in chains, three humiliations... Each round is worse than the last - more dramatically so, in this telling.

(The Darkling's voice moves to nearly a purr on certain parts of the tale.)

That purr is bad for Svetka's composure.

This doesn't seem to discourage the Darkling at all.

Svetka wouldn't want her to stop.
