eret talks to the dream team

The first thing Eret notices is that Wilbur trades away as much of his shop homework as he can.

He's slick about it, and he makes sense. Eret's better at shop than him, he's better at English, why don't they trade?

The second thing Eret notices is that Wilbur doesn't test his song spells, not if he can help it.

After that, they start paying more attention. Wilbur runs from mals, but he doesn't cast spells unless he has to, and when he does they're often not ideal. Wilbur always does things by hand if he can, even when it takes twice as long, even when everyone else in the class casts a spell. Wilbur is obviously, painfully jealous of everyone around him, all the time. Wilbur's breath catches when he thinks he might have to use mana.

None of which is conclusive. But it's suggestive. And the thing it's suggestive of is that maybe Eret should get out of this group sooner rather than later.

They don't really know anyone outside it, nor are they as good at cold-approaches as Wilbur. But maybe the junior they sold Schlatt's drugs to will be able to help.

"Hey." Squint. "Do you have more potions already?"

"...No." Fuck fuck fuck why did they decide to do this this was a terrible idea-- "I, uh, I think the group I'm with right now is--I think I'd rather see if anyone else is interested? I can do manual labor but my affinity's traps, I've got an artifact working that sets off an alarm when there are mals in the area." I can be useful, please, please believe me.

"You'd probably want to ask the other freshmen? I don't really know them, though. --CLAY!"

Clay doesn't look like a freshman. He's got a power-sharer to match Nick's. "What is it?"

"New kid, interested in being a minion. You know I'm no good at this politics stuff."

"Sure." Blink. "What are you offering, and what do you want?"

"Just protection for now, you know, people to walk in the hallways with. Maybe more if we like each other. I'm artificing track and my affinity's traps, if that's useful. I can also do manual labor, homework help, you know. Whatever your freshmen need."

"Hm." Clay leans back a little, looks Eret up and down. "Have you made anything yet?"

"I have an alarm that goes off when there are mals nearby. Doesn't need any ongoing mana. --And a container for it to prevent theft, but the container doesn't move, I'd have to make a new one unless you want it to be in a bad corner of the library."

"Probably not. Who knows with freshmen, though. You can verify it works?"

"Yes."

"Huh.

Yeah, okay. Get that and I'll talk with our freshmen? No promises, but they'll probably take you for that, at least as a trial."

"That's all I ask."
