Theo drops Vanguard Agency, amicably. They just are not the right fit for him. Too much focus on action, activity, maximizing value and time. Maple Agency works instead... There's a guy called Mark, who is very boring and very thorough.

He sets up, procedures, basically. Pre-ordered services and deliveries that cannot be stopped, or at least not without bothering someone, so that backlashed him isn't tempted to cancel them. No-contact delivery. That kind of thing. Carefully worded instructions on his profile, without disclosing his backlash more than absolutely necessary, informing people to not expect him to bring up problems and concerns unless specifically asked, to phrase questions about his condition as a safety or efficiency concern more than a comfort concern...

And then he catches a flight to Toronto and Mark books an apartment and he arranges to meet Meghan again, with an eye towards planning a dungeon run together.

She'll meet him at a comfy BnB. There's a cat.

She's wearing practical clothes with artistic touches. (She hired a stylist to design dungeon outfits that are designed to be eye-catching while still being both practical and something a reasonable person would wear on purpose)

"Hello! Good to see you again after the museum. Um... Right. Sorry about the NDA over my backlash. Or, not sorry, exactly, but-" He waves vaguely. Nervously. "Yeah."

(Teddy does seem to notice the clothes as special! But doesn't actually remark on them.)

"Not a problem at all. It's pretty common for people to prefer not to disclose."

Deep breath.

"My backlash is basically - social anxiety. I get extremely worried about - how I am imposing on people or bothering them, basically. Am I acting creepy? Am I standing in a weird way? Does that person think I'm checking them out? No way I could say 'hi' in passing, that might annoy them. Does that other driver think I'm following too close, I'd better slow down. Or better yet just park and wait until there's no traffic at midnight. That poor grocery store cashier doesn't deserve to have to deal with me buying things. The 911 dispatchers obviously have better things to do than worry about my broken bones. At high ends."

"Yeah I see how we're so compatible. Mine is...basically all about taking up other people's attention. I can be really inconsiderate. I have checklists for when I'm doing victim rescues so I don't forget to offer them a water bottle. Or tings like that."

"Good idea. I have- um. I tried some things with Wendy who I'm barely at all compatible with and it goes a lot better if I consider my comfort as - A job? I can tell my backlash, I'm not being a Karen by getting up to drink water, I am doing the job of being ready. Equipment maintenance. Or, uh, guiding someone isn't bothering them, especially if they keep reminding me they want guiding."

"I always want people to interact with me when I'm backlashed. Though if you'd rather not talk the whole time, once it gets down some I can like, text people and you can do something else too. I will just...sometimes interrupt to make sure you're not ignoring me."

"I'm a little nervous about how it will go but the only thing for that is to do it. Wait until we have to deal with a dungeon and then see. And make improvements from there. Right? ...I've taken some training classes on dungeon basics."

"Yeah. We'll get our agents to find us a dungeon that's both in need of a sensor and not too dangerous. I won't push myself too hard on backlash so hopefully I'll have enough brain left to troubleshoot if there are problems afterwards."

"That sounds good! Um, sorry to be nervous. I really hope everything is going to be fine... I kind of feel like, as an esper, I have to help. You know?"

"Being nervous is really normal. Honestly it'd be weirder if you weren't. I was plenty nervous before my first time."

"All shall be well. Um... The main reason I wanted to meet in person was to, er, reveal my backlash, and that's done. If you have other things to be doing that would be totally valid? Not that I'm shooing you away either..."

"Nothing in particular but if we're done here I'll just email my agent and we'll wait and see. It might take a few days to find something, not every little dungeon actually needs several espers on hand."

"Sounds like a plan."

Yay! Things are arranged and it was barely horrible at all! He's going to get esper money and feel really great from guiding and everything is going to be fine.

a couple of days later he gets a text

do you have plans today? They found a maze dungeon that could really use a sensor. They want me because the monsters are fast and hard to avoid completely.

(link to dungeon listing)

once they have all the victims out they're probably just going to start burning the whole thing down.

ok

I was getting pretty antsy waiting for the metaphorical shoe to drop

There is only so much "settling in" to do

A bit later

Talked to my agent and I'm on the way.

And something like thirty minutes later: He shows up at the dungeon site in an SUV with tinted windows. He is wearing shorts and a t-shirt and long pants and a hoodie on top of that. Layers. For easy removal. He has a fancy new laptop and a fancy new smartphone and two copies of dungeon-optimized mapping software he's not really used to yet; It loads up with a half-populated dungeon map as he approaches.

Someone in a uniform points him towards the portal. He's not really taking in too many... Details of the scene. He's looking around for Meghan. She's probably going to be noticeable if she's out here, right?

(He carefully doesn't reach out with his power; He can sort of recognize people by feel, but for one he ought to be carefully rationing it and for two it feels a little intrusive even if he's not pulling on any of their senses and they're not saying anything back.)

She's standing in a designated waiting area by the portal and waves as he approaches She's wearing one of her carefully engineered outfits (it does have shorts and a tank top underneath. She also has a box (with a gun in it)

"All set?"

"I should be..."

One of the DRT people nods at Meghan, then tells him that everything will be fine, just take your time and keep your cool. Don't rush. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. It's a Newbie Speech, Meghan can tell- She's probably heard something like it before.

Theo reaches out to hold Meghan's hand, and then they can all go in. There's a little clearing of stomped-flat corn near the entrance, with about a half dozen DRT people with guns...

"So, the plan is... I just find the victims and point Meghan through the maze to retrieve them. She goes with them back here, using her power to hide from the monsters if necessary, and I make sure we got everyone. Right? Anything else to say before I, um, do an initial sweep?"

Thumbs up.

....."Okay, just a minute."

He shuts his eyes and - reach out and feel the DRT people, and Meghan (:Hi (relief you are here):) and - out and out in a narrow line at roughly ground level, sweeeeeeep all around like a RADAR screen.

He lets out a deep breath. And starts marking points on the map software. "Um, I count five victims. Please don't rely on these to be exact. I'll be able to refine them better with practice and stuff to reference them to... But I think... This one is closest to explored sections? Do the monsters react if you push through the corn? That might change whether it makes sense to explore the maze or just push straight through."

She squeezes his hand in response to the message.

"Yeah, if the monsters are going to be paying more attention if the maze is disturbed it might be best to go around, if the victims aren't at immediate risk."

"Right, so... I think..."

They covered the rules, so to speak, when he was training. Or... Tried to. He's basically going to round it off to 'don't'. Until he has much better understanding.

"Um. Just a minute here. I'm going to tell the victims to stay out of the way and help is on the way. And see if I can get them to tell me anything about the layout deeper in to connect this map. I think you can start going... This way? That whole - section - seems likely to connect towards these two victims." Poke poke the map.

They must be spooked.

She brings up her map app on her phone and annotates it. "You test your radio? No need to spend the backlash on keeping in touch."

Augh. He checks his radio. "Seems good. Right... Minimize power use."

"Some dungeons scramble radio and you'll be great for those, but when the radio is available..."

She starts checking and loading her gun. "I don't expect to use this thing this time but better to have it available."
