The wording of the homework assignment does not exclude self-hypnosis. So Kiri doesn't need to go find the district of Chialto that's enjoying an unseasonable kidnapping and ask someone to volunteer as part of her longshot plan to save their planet, and she doesn't have to form some kind of terrifying reciprocal arrangement with a classmate. She just needs to be in the room while Taylor is out and get it over with really fast.

Kiri is not actually hungry because she had a big breakfast. She is longing for lunch, but just because the food is (or seems) good, and it looked like Taylor was headed for lunch, so Kiri goes to their room and draws the canopy around the bed shut in case there's some kind of bug or nanobot or whatever a psionic is situation and this helps at all. The video camera is not hard to figure out but she experiments with it a little just to be sure; she doesn't want to do this twice. (Even if the plaintive nerd part of her is having abstractly interesting ideas about variants to try. It's probably possible to hypnotize people with temperature patterns but it won't show up well on video, and she's hoping to play her powers close to the chest with as few displays as necessary.)

She records an induction, monotonous and monotone, firmly in the frame of mind of the hypnotist and not the subject, and then she makes sure she can do recording and playback at the same time, and puts herself in a trance.

She might forget something else, but she really needs to keep track of who all her classmates are and what characteristics they've exhibited, just in case the dangerous ones have tells - there's nothing to save her if they don't. But they might.

So she's going to rehearse whatever evidence they drop until it sticks, and now it will be a little easier, to do that.

She drops off the complete recording at the teacher's office along with the loaner camera, and only then goes to see what's for lunch.
