"I wouldn't expect it to be an immediate crisis either way, so sure, if Felicity is comfortable with it."

"I'm fine," the sprite says serenely.

Johann and Belladonna shuffle out of the room.

"The principal reason so many wizard children die young is that our world is populated by obscene numbers of what are called maleficaria, mals for short, and they like to eat us, mostly though not necessarily exclusively for our mana, and adult wizards have more defensive options than an undereducated teenager who's just starting to generate enough to be tasty. Mundanes can be and occasionally are eaten by mals but because they don't believe in them the mals are not especially more threatening to them than particularly aggressive wildlife; for this reason it is somewhat protective to be around mundanes who don't believe in magic. I don't know if witch mana is edible - it seems to be interchangeable, witches can interact with our mana storage, but I don't know if mals could smell it or extract it from a witch - and I don't know if witches relevantly count as believing in magic as long as they don't specifically know mals exist, and I don't know if any came along with us on our mishap."

"--I sincerely doubt that any witch would be able to actively disbelieve a random monster they had never seen before, we don't have sufficiently obscene numbers of random monsters to pose a threat to our children en masse but we have enough that most people will encounter at least a few in their first decades of witchhood."

"Okay. Then probably not knowing about mals in particular - or, not very particular, there are hundreds of kinds - isn't helping anything the way it helps when everybody saw a moonhawk dive for me and figured it for a very aggressive swan."

"If I see a very bizarre hawk dive at someone I assume it's a magic monster and I should shred it," the sprite agrees.

"Okay. Then the info is not a hazard. Thank you for taking this retroactively-not-a-risk."

"I don't mind if somebody messes with my head a little as long as that person is me," she agrees cheerfully.

Nod, nod. "Should we invite the others back in -?"

"Sure." And then she does so, via Sending, which she has no idea Bella is capable of doing, so Bella is left out of the loop.

Johann rolls back in followed by Belladonna, who is using a blind person cane.

"We think the infohazard isn't to witches. Our world is infested with bajillions of monsters called maleficaria that like to eat us. No idea if any came along, we haven't seen any."

Belladonna pauses for a moment.

"Three came through, landing not far from your group," she reports. "Two of them went after a group of students who happened to be nearby, and the third wandered off, dug up a cache of Kisses someone literally buried for some reason, and is currently chewing its way through them peacefully. Of the two who went after the students, one was killed and the other one is currently having its fur brushed."

"...having its fur brushed? What is it, a chayaena? Those are... theoretically domesticable..."

She picks up a piece of paper, which after a moment gains an image.

The image is of a chayena by the side of a spring gnawing contentedly on what may or may not be a humanoid thigh bone while two girls coo admiringly over it and brush its fur using the kind of brushes they make for brushing horses. A trio of other girls are sitting nearby, apparently discussing the matter.

The girl in the middle has black feathered wings, and sort of looks like she was wearing too much cheap mascara until she cried it off, but otherwise looks pretty much exactly like a girl from Atlanta in Bella's year.

"- Jaromira?"

"--Okay, I know you didn't meet her since arriving."

"Is that seriously her name? She looks just like this girl from Atlanta who was in our year."

"Jaromira Grigori. An Erinye, I didn't bring them up when discussing terrible ways to get mana because plenty of them are like her--Erinyes get mana from other people's pain. She's a dominatrix. I don't think she's from the American south."

"Has she got a twin brother?"

"--A twin sister. Katarzyna Grigori. She and Lisao and I study together sometimes."

"Huh. Well, the surnames and the twins don't match so maybe it's just a coincidence."

"Give me a moment..." he pulls out his phone and flicks through it, eventually finding a photograph of him and Lisao and Katarzyna in the living room of his and Lisao's suite.

The jaw is a little softer, and the body type is very different, but that looks an awful lot like an airbrushed version of Kanimir Kozlov's face.

"...gosh. She looks a lot like Kanimir. Only, um." Awkward handwave.

"A female Erinye instead of a male human?"
