A 7-5-3 coming of age ritual in thomassia

The workers at the nuclear power plant are attentive and devoted like always. They track neutron fluxes, monitor enrichment, measure actinides, extract transuranics, do the online fuel processing, and many other fancy technobabble words. There is nothing close to danger happening, what with the extreme error margin on the equipment and the total absence of anything under pressure, but even a tiny error adds up to a huge amount of less energy for the people who need it!

The truly vast heat from the reactor goes through many steps: here it first makes iron, then once it's cooled down it helps make hydrogen for balloons and chemicals, only thirdly electricity, then other chemicals, then finally it makes more sense to just use the heat for heating up someplace else as it's sent into water that is then sent alooong...

...tooo an adorable-looking old village, with wooden houses surrounded by tall trees. The homes of the village form multiple semicircles, surrounding play areas for children. One of the buildings is from a bathhouse, when coal was how you had heating and many were to poor to have their own baths.

The bathhouse always seemed so quaint and old, like many things beloved by the children here. There were rows of wooden and plastic stools, with the kids all washing themselves or others off as they chat about their day and their friends. Though some of the shyer kids hide off in corners, or in smaller pools shared with their closest friends, it's considered both proper and important to be comfortable around many others. Contributing means living near work, and although cities get built tall and trains get built wide, at times both can be full, though of course that's the kind of challenge they enthusiastically embrace.

Little Cynthia is very good at being comfortable with others. She excitedly runs around, helping the other boys and girls lather places that are harder to reach and enjoys dunking herself in the heat of the pools reaching into the ground. She's so full of happiness she gives the most willing of the kids hugs! Her housefather, when playing with some of the younger kids who've shouted for his help, smiles in pride. Cynthia really has a good heart and a lot of love to give!

Bella, it must be said, is more nervous and reserved. She loves dancing and music, and she loves performing for others, but at this moment she'd rather be all by herself. She sneaks off to one of the more private alcoves, closes the sliding door behind her, sits down, and stretches weary muscles, decadently lying back and letting everything lazily settle in its more natural place in the private space. This is her time, and she spends it by herself, perfectly her way.

But she has a place to be. The alarm on her phone interrupts her lazily basking in the wonderful steam, and Bella begins preparing for the trip to the woods. After drying herself off, she reaches into the waterproof pack she brought with her for the day, and pulls out the layers: that special type of underwear to be worn under ballet leggings, the black innermost thermal layer (she gulps at the thought of wearing one made to match her skin like Cynthia's!), the gloves built to slide into the suit, and finally the snowsuit in her favorite pair of colors.

She instinctively gives herself a thumbs up for remembering everything, then gets going: phone, check. She places it slightly diagonally in an unobtrusive pocket at her back, feeling the ingenuous pocket inside within pocket wrap itself all around the phone to make it impossible for it to fall out without pulling the second pocket all the way up out of the way. She taps the location and emergency summoning beacon sown into her base layer top, check. And finally she feels around for the very subtle ridge made by the... radar thing in her leggings, and yup she can absolutely feel it when she really pays attention, how does that even work?, check. She smiles to herself, knowing that the adults and the protector boys will always know that she's safe and her knowing that she can easily get them to rescue her if something dangerous happens.

Bella puts on her special socks, her special shoes with the ring you spin to tighten, and finally the warm, padded helmet built to keep her head warm and the inside of the suit dry if water or snow were to fall on her head. She steps out into the cold, takes a deep breath of the air to "fill it", and already feels how her helmet is helping keep the air she's breathing warmer. She's overwhelmed with excitement for her claiming day!

The Atom Guard consider the claiming day one of their proudest achievements, and they always make it a day to celebrate! Showing the world the limitless power of the atom, how much energy it gets them and how little waste it leaves behind, is among the most valuable things they do for the world. And they're filled with immense pride at the thought of people getting to see how much nuclear energy does for them in their lives.

Bella, making her way through the forest, comes to the clearing. There's a metal detector they're supposed to use, that lets them avoid bumping into any cubes buried by others, but usally they're buried close enough that you mostly hit them with your trowel. Also, the current clearing they're over isn't very full yet, so she shouldn't be too worried. She pads around the ground, and finds as good a place as any to bury the cube with her ID on it. Clearing the snow and making a hole in the dirt that fits the cube takes... next to no time at all. She hands over the trowel, letting the other kids bury their cubes, and waits for the speech by her adult. After some giddy waiting, all the kids are gathered in a circle, wonderfully warm in the bitter cold, and listen excitedly

"Today, you took responsibility. When you live your lives, you leave behind both the things you do for others, and the waste that they must handle. Today, you found a place to keep the longest lasting and most harmful waste you leave behind, the nuclear waste." The adult lifted a cube, just as small as all the others. "This is all the waste that will be made, from all the energy you'll use in your life. And you have, with your very own hands, found a safe place to keep it. Now you can live on happy, safe in the knowledge that you've stepped up and done your part to care for future generations and the brothers and sisters you love so much, and helped to leave a better world, full of warmth, behind."

Then a sigh. "Yes, the cake buffet is open." All the children erupt in cheers.
