A Multiversal judge arrives in a strange city
Permalink

It is a dark and stormy night, according to at least one of the occupants of this calm city this afternoon. He peers in through the window of the local police department.

"We have a missing person case," says the Commissioner. "A suspect came into our office and reported he was hiking the canyon with his wife, Berra, with no harnesses. Says she slipped and fell into the canyon, landed at the bottom, and vanished. Not a sign of her when he made his way down."

"Do we have him in custody?"

"Yes, and he swore that he didn't do anything to her, doesn't know where she is, et cetera, passed all the lie detector tests. We have agents exploring the canyon now-"

"But you haven't found any dead squirrels."

"I - why would we be looking for dead squirrels? - what the fuck are you doing here, Batman?"

Berra wakes up in a daze and pushes herself off the ground. She's not in the canyon anymore - where is she?

Wait wait can we go back to the Batman thing. Why is there a guy in a bat-themed suit there?

That guy sounds awesome.

The Batman thing was supposed to be the B-plot of the story and the Berra thing was supposed to be the A-plot - oh whatever.

BACK ON ZANEM:

"Tell me, Commissioner Gordon: what is the squirrel population of the Grand Canyon?"

"Not a clue," says the Commissioner, whose name is Zevan.

"Then we shall deduce it together. What is the human population of the Grand Canyon?"

"Probably zero? Or maybe, like, sixteen human tour guides?"

"Clearly you have never been tied up over the Grand Canyon by the Riddler and forced to make your way to the edge by a human ladder, Commissioner Gordon. There are twenty human tour guides! And how many squirrels does a human eat in a day?"

"...none."

"Clearly you have never been tied up in a sewer by Killer Croc with nothing to eat but rodents and sewage. A healthy human eats fifteen squirrels in a day! And how often do squirrels reproduce?"

"Is there a point to this madness?"

"Clearly you have never been tied up in a zoo by the Penguin and forced to watch squirrels make love. Twice per year, with four babies per litter! Now has the magnitude of your own folly been revealed to you?"

"Why do you keep getting tied up?"

"Twenty tour guides, times fifteen squirrels per tour guide per day, times three hundred and sixty-five days per year, divided by, open parenthesis, four squirrel births per squirrel litter, times two squirrel litters per squirrel couple per year, divided by two adult squirrels per squirrel couple, closed parenthesis, equals: twenty-seven thousand, three hundred and seventy-five adult squirrels!"

"But-"

"But nothing, Commissioner Gordon! And so, what is the squirrel population of the Grand Canyon?"

"Twenty-seven thousand and... whatever you said?"

"So you would think. And yet there are a mere fourteen thousand! What does that tell you?"

"That one of your nonsense assumptions was wrong."

"It tells us that something is taking the squirrels."

And he vanishes into the night.

Meanwhile, back on Eifwen...
