let's see if dropping blai in 1967 lets him fix the many very serious problems they have in this setting

The fog is beautiful.

(Even now, Solomon is proud of it. He worked late every night in the lab for three months, to get the green working. It came out well; it's a lovely shade. Thematically appropriate. The timing was perfect, too, he's not sure where the Nightingale's been finding these people - or, okay, fine, the Philosopher's done his share of the organizing legwork - but the artist they found for this clearly knows his stuff. The butterflies were glorious. Solomon can't actually remember why it was butterflies, he thinks it was on purpose - there's something, Lucien dearly loves his historical references, but wow does the man like to run his mouth, and the politics part was never really Solomon's thing.)

The fog is safe to breathe. That was the first and most important criterion. It's not hurting anybody.

Unfortunately, what it is doing is cutting visibility to approximately six inches.

Solomon knows that there's a pillar two meters to his right, because three minutes ago he could see it fine.

He can't, now. He's pretty sure it would be a good idea to be standing there instead of here, but his legs don't seem to be taking instructions right now. That's...really embarrassing, mostly, he always imagined - he had pictured - he'd thought he wouldn't be a coward, is all, and it's an awfully awkward moment to be realizing he was wrong.

Solomon had also not been picturing the part where– he's not sure what happened, exactly, he couldn't see anything, because whoever it was who freaked out picked the exact moment when nobody could see anything, thanks to Solomon's (beautiful, thematically appropriate) fog, but something happened, he heard the thud and then the screaming and then the air got really cold and he's having the incredibly stupid thought, now, that it's wasted potential, they had an actual literal Frost Dancer coming to their meetings and somehow the ideas guys (Evangeline and Lucien, mostly) didn't think to ask him if he could pull off some thematically appropriate artistic shit with his whole ice magic thing, do it as a two-man act with the butterfly guy - it would've been incredible -

Solomon is pretty sure he should be getting down on the ground right about now. He's pretty sure that someone, somewhere, made a mistake here, and that all of this was a really bad idea, and if his mother ever finds out he was here she's going to lose her shit. That's also a stupid thought, it's not the part, it's not– the crowd is panicking, now, and at some point in the past Dr. Solomon Cartwright had the brilliant idea that it would be impressive to have the fog roll out all green and sparkly, glowing in ribbons when the Nightingale's voice hits the hit notes (and it was, it was everything he had ever imagined), but the crowd is panicking and the screaming is lighting up the fog in sparks and ripples and they can't find the exits, can they, and oh dear god why did they bring the wolves, what was Evangeline thinking, that was always going to be a disaster waiting to happen and the waiting is about to be over–

it's everything he imagined, though,

it's beautiful

Well the first thing he's going to do when he lands in a MYSTERIOUS GREEN MIST is cast his Air Bubble.

it’s safe to breathe though, he worked really hard on that part

It’s already starting to dissipate.

(The color and sound-resonance-glow effect was only intended to last about thirty seconds. Longer, Lucien said, would have been overdoing it.)

The sky itself isn't visible yet, but it is visible that there are three different sun-bright light sources, shining through the fog, in completely different parts of the sky.

There are a lot of running footsteps. There's a general background din of voices - yelling, frantic, someone shouting orders (in a language Blai does not even slightly speak), interspersed with screaming.

Someone runs right into Blai, hard. He could probably have seen the collision coming, visibility is now up to a meter, but he had a lot of momentum.

Oof. "Excuse me! Taldane?"

Nope! He's apologizing and also swearing loudly in three different languages but Taldane is not one of them, and he seems to be in a hurry.

(Where's Rio, he has to find Rio - once the riot-or-whatever-it's-called started, it took approximately three seconds to realize that obviously the kid has never been in a real fight before and he's been on edge for days, those are the worst possible circumstances to be startled in - funny, that, it's the first time he's thinking the word "kid" alongside Rio's use-name, they were born in the same year, but riverfolk grow up faster than fae, and anyway that's not the point, it's not– this was a bad idea, wasn't it, blood and brine it's going to be a whole shitstorm, great thing how he'll be gone down into the River the instant he's sure that all of his friends are, like, still alive...)

Rio: currently pinned flat on the stone by four of the Summerlands guards.

(A fifth is half-encased in a block of ice.)

(He's not one of the ones screaming. He's not making a sound.)

oh shit

As the fog swirls away in loops and eddies, Blai will see:

The outlines of a plaza, paved in huge slabs of some unrecognizable stone, ringed with pillars.

Banners, though most of them are now on the ground.

Really quite a lot of people, most of them over thataways. Now that it's possible to see more than a meter in front of one's face, the crowd is starting to successfully disperse towards the - well, probably those spirally holes are the exits?

(There are no suns in the sky. There are three enormous floating crystals, glowing vibrantly.)

Some of the people do not look entirely human.

(Rio looks human, right now! Approximately! There's a lot happening, sure, but he can hold his glamour together until a little bit of stress. His father made sure of that.)

The guy currently pulling out a dagger to, apparently, try to simultaneously fight all four of the people holding the tall pale teenaged boy down, does not look human! He has gills!

...Some of the crowd are not making their way to the exits. Some of them are down on the stone and not moving.

Oh, and there's the green-haired man currently mostly inside a block of ice. Also not moving.

Blai does not have a spell to tell him if people encased in ice are dead yet or not.

This situation is hideously illegible. He doesn't know which of these people are on whose side or what any of them are trying to accomplish, so any actual combat spells he'd better avoid. He could make something way worse by dropping a channel in this mess, too.

Sucks to be him.

He sprints for the concentration of downed people and hits them all with positive energy.

This is a very surprising and confusing turn of events for everyone nearby enough to witness it!

(It's also a great way to collect, like, four simultaneous life-debts from the people down who would not otherwise have been on track to survive. In case Blai wanted some of those.)

(There is no sensory correlate of this on Blai's end, so he may not be immediately aware that it happened.)

The guy inside the block of ice wasn't dead, and is now substantially less injured, but is not actually out of the ice and is pretty unhappy about it.

There are perhaps as many as several things here that Solomon did not think through all the way. Like the part where the fog is disappearing like it was meant to and he's now more or less fully visible, rooted to the spot, in front of all the - but no one actually saw him set off the fog, right, that was the whole reason he set it up with the delayed release (that part alone took a month and was brilliant and he can't ever publish it now, can he, because IF HIS MOTHER FINDS OUT THAT–)

- wait, what?

What

Oh there's something interesting happening over there!

It would probably be a wiser idea to, you know, not fly directly toward the person who just ???did some kind of magic he's never seen before???

Then again, if Xavier were the sort of person who did thing because they were a wise idea, would he be here, no, he would not.

A very small man with wings drops out of the sky near where Blai is standing, and stares intently at him.

What????!!!

- well, nobody's hurt, anymore, apparently, which means that the guards have no excuse to do anything lethally nasty to Rio, and it's not like Marlowe owes the kid, he's not here to rescue him if the only thing at risk is his precious dignity.

Marlowe drops his dagger on the stones, holds his hands briefly up and open at the guards, and then turns to also stare at the person who– wait, what faction is he even here with, Marlowe has an excellent memory for faces and is pretty sure he's never seen this man before in his life?

Rio also does not recognize this person.

He does know approximately all of the various insignia and iconography of approximately every faction that could possibly be represented here. (His father made sure of that, too.) Is the stranger wearing or carrying any recognizable indication of his house or affiliation? That seems kind of important to know, all of a sudden.

"Taldane? Chelish? Infernal?" Blai asks without much optimism, mostly at the small guy but everyone else is also welcome to chime in.

Xavier doesn't recognize any of those words! Weird.

Fine. It's not the first time that he's been faced with a no-shared-languages communication barrier, and it won't be the first time that having the ability to do a magic light show proves to be useful and not just good for one's popularity with the neighbors.

...How can he depict whatever the heck this man just did with a lightshow, though. That's the tricky bit. It'll take a moment of thought to come up with something good enough - he's not going to do it badly, that would just be an insult to the man -

The man's garb is mostly deeply uninformative as to his allegiance. He's wearing something on a necklace, though. Rio hasn't quite managed to get a good look at it but he doesn't think it's one he recognizes...
