Bonnie gets a notebook
Permalink

It's been a long day, and she has been postponing doing her Latin homework the whole afternoon, spending it on OpenRailwayMap instead. She must really get around to it soon, the sun is already down and her mum is going to be on her case soon.

She shuts down the computer and grabs her notebook from her bag.

Uh, that's weird.

What's weird?

Well, for once that's not her notebook, nor her deskmate's!

It's pretty tho.

It's well-made, too, upon further inspection. The cover is sturdy and the paper is a good texture for writing: neither flimsy nor frustratingly thick, smooth without being slippery.

"Mooooom, thank you for the notebook, it's really cute!"

No response.

Oh well, she's probably gone to the supermarket, and from past experience it's very possible Bonnie even told her goodbye without noticing herself doing it.

So.

She grabs a mildly glittery pen, opens the notebook to the first page, and gets to procrastinating her homework more writing a proper title in it.

Evil Plan to take over the World,
because Frakly whoever is running it
is doing a Poor Job

A response appears in similarly glittery ink:

What makes the plan evil?

So that just happened. Bonnie checks to see if she's dreaming. She probably wouldn't be able to tell, but she can clearly see the words she didn't write on the notebook, and she remembers watching a video about words in dreams being weird. Was it a Tom Scott one? Probably, the guy is amazing.

Is the notebook some kind of e-ink display? She tries looking at it carefully, and bending the page (gently enough to not crease it!).

The paper doesn't resist being bent. It looks like paper on both sides. It's thick enough that the text isn't visible from the other side just from the ambient light in the room, but it lets enough light through that she can see there doesn't appear to be anything inside the page.

Weeeeird. She tries writing some more and paying a lot of attention to how the ink appears.

It's not really Evil per se, but you never hear the heroes talk about making a Good Plan, whereas the villain always has an Evil Plan, and making the world a better place seems to be the kind of thing that needs a plan...

It looks a lot like if someone with an invisible hand was writing with an invisible pen.

I think a plan to make the world a better place sounds both good and smart! And I think that Good Plans definitely sound heroic, and even if you haven't heard about heroes making them already, there's nothing stopping you from making one now.

She passes her hand above the page while the words appear, looks from different angles. She still can't see how this thing works.

Ok but, would it make for a good story? The heroes should be a ragtag band of underdogs, winning by guts and luck.

Well, I guess Luke did have a proper plan to deal with the Death Star. Ok.

She crosses out "Evil" and adds "Heroic" above it on the title.

(If, in the process of passing her hands over the page, she touches words that are currently appearing, she may notice that the ink doesn't smudge or smear.)

I think it can make for a good story! There are lots of kinds of heroes, and ragtag underdogs can still make good plans. Sometimes they have to make really good plans because of how big the challenge they're facing is!

I might be able to help with your heroic plan, actually.

It is a big challenge. So many things to fix, so many people to help...

Oh? Say more?

Well, I was sent by the Spirit of Youthful Femininity to offer you a portion of its power. And I think that would be really helpful, if you want to make the world a better place for everyone.

The Spirit of Youthful Femininity? Never heard of it...

Is this some kind of animist thing? The Japanese have all the different kamis, right?

She's long learned that all magic is prestidigitation, misdirection and technology, but... she still hasn't found the trick. She's going to keep humoring whoever is doing this, it's been fun so far.

Lots of people don't know it by that name, but it's still part of many people's lives! It's there every time a girl imagines herself in an amazing adventure or whirlwind romance with a fictional character; every time someone chooses a life that feels happy and beautiful and true to them even if it seems impractical or socially unacceptable; every time a boy lets himself do something he likes that's considered girly; every time someone has beautiful power or powerful beauty; and in so many other situations. And, when the circumstances are right, it can find someone to give the opportunity to live their best life as their best self with a portion of itself.
