She smiles at him and pets him a bit more and then keeps reading.

When it's nearly curfew she sets the notes on fire (with matches) and then leaves.

Miranda loans Fawley a demonstrative stick and her first year Charms notes and wand motion transcriptions for the spells.

She appreciates that! It'll make the studying go better!

The next day is Saturday and she's absent all day. In the evening she goes to her rooms and is asked where she was and says 'my mother said she found a secret passage to Hogsmeade in her day and bet me ten Galleons I couldn't find it inside a month. Once the month's up - or I figure it out, I guess - I'll study with everyone else. But I really want the Galleons, I've almost enough for a broomstick."

"Ooooh," one of her roommates says. "Do we get half if we find it?"

"I don't know about half but you could have a Galleon."

"Deal. Fourth floor, statue of the witch, you say 'dissendium'."

" - brilliant," Fawley says, and does not sleep well.

The next day she asks Miranda if Miranda knows of any ways a first-year could get a Galleon on short notice - "I lost a bet."

"Could you pay back a loan?"

"Um. Maybe."

"I don't have an obvious way to pay back a loan but I am sure I could come up with one?"

"Why were you making this bet?"

"Not making it would have been worse."

"Is somebody extorting you for cash you don't have?"

"No. Is there some way to earn it -"

"I'm sure you could find one but nothing formalized. I can spare one Galleon but I'd either need to know how you were paying it back, or know that this wouldn't happen again. Ideally both, but I'll settle for one or the other."

"I won't make the same mistake again."

"And you implied to whoever you made this bet with that you had a Galleon, can you see why I might want more detail?"

"They asked where I went all the time and I said my mother'd bet me ten Galleons that I couldn't find a secret passage into Hogsmeade which she found when she was here - On Hogwarts says it's just a legend - and one of the girls offered to help me win the bet and then turned out she knew exactly where it was. I won't let that happen again."

"Okay. For reference, that's an absurd amount of money to bet on something like that, let alone to bet with an eleven year old. Five Sickles, maybe." She goes rummaging in her bag. "If that."

"I had to explain why I was ignoring them all the whole month."

"Did you try 'wouldn't you like to know'?"

"If someone said that to me I'd follow them."

"If someone wonders where you're going they might follow you. Or have their cat do it."

"- which is what I wanted to avoid by having an explanation. Instead of just being mysterious."

"Looking for secret passages is an explanation even if there's not a bet. Or 'I like to read'. Or 'I'm shy'."

"Have to keep those up permanently, though." Sigh. "I won't do it again."

Miranda hands her a Galleon. "If you have any questions I'm available," she says.
