It's very hard to exist without drones in Zmavlimu'e.

The mean Keeper has four dozen and one drones. The barest minimum needed to survive as considered by most people is two – one butler and one valet, and that doesn't count the drones that would account for your income stream. Though now, it's much more common for Keepers to be the breadwinners and not merely rely on owning drones that do all the work.

Konrad doesn't have any. Or more precisely, he doesn't keep any. His parents gave him drones for his allotment, of course, but he instead had them take them back on a very favorable indefinite lease. He has always preferred to do as many things himself.

It's very ironic that he doesn't, because he works as a drone trainer. A very good one, in fact. He's very, very good at doing proactivity training, which is usually finicky and difficult for most trainers. He knows martial arts, shooting, and survivalism, so he sells most of the drones he trains to the military to be sergeant drones. The others are usually sent to him to be trained as valets, though with them he only does proactivity training without skill training – they have to go to technical school for that.

Some people say that it's easy for him because he's half drone. This is not meant to be a compliment.

Having drones in Zmavlimu'e is expected. It's expected that you have drones that will do laundry for you, that will grocery shop for you, that will clean your house, that will manage your schedule, that will fill out and file your forms. Konrad doesn't really find doing any of these things particularly aversive, and, again, he much prefers doing things himself.

When an alien species arrives that is not eusocial, that does not keep drones, and does not have any similar institution, Konrad is intrigued.

When the alien species turns out to have selected subpopulations that have their own culture and jobs, and one of them is the one that does all of the physical and forceful work, Konrad is very intrigued.

The Imperium met Tapa first, but will also send ambassadors to other countries. Voa, Anitam, and Cene get representatives too as big and powerful countries. The Imperium tries to send a representative to Tuviri but it runs into trouble, and cancels it.

Tapa arranges a treaty with the Imperium to do swap immigration where Zmavlipre can live and farm on Tapai tropical land, and Tapai can live in Zmavliterdi's temperate regions. They also work out a mutual tourist visa treaty.

The Imperial Ministry of Aliens starts a program to match Zmavlipre and Amentans who have similar interests with each other to become penpals! The Imperium explains that penpals are very Zmavlimu'ean and throughout history they have had lots of correspondence with each other. Their communicative culture is very textual. The Imperium would like more Amentans to learn Standard Imperial and more Zmavlipre to learn Amentan languages. If you want to sign up, fill out this form. It's best if you already know something about the other language. Also, sorry, this program is only available at the moment to people who are citizens of the four countries mentioned.

A lot of people on Amenta want to talk to aliens!! Aliens with no hair and only two castes!! And who also have a pollution sense that's tied to aesthetics? People want to ask questions about that.

The people who sign up are disproportionately green, though in absolute terms purples have the most signups.

Collectively, all four nations have a population of more than three billion.

Wow okay that is a lot and even if only a fraction of those were applying, Zmavlimu'e only has a population of two hundred million keepers. And of those, not everyone is interested in talking to aliens.

The Imperial Ministry of Aliens will put out an announcement saying that in more diplomatic terms and that not everyone will be matched. Sorry!

Konrad is very interested to have correspondence with Amentans!! Can he get a grey penpal. Is caste an option on the form.

Yes.

Then he will put that down.

Konrad doesn't keep any drones. If people want to know what keeping drones are like he should not be matched with them. If they want to know what not keeping drones is like in a society that expects it, then they should be matched with them.

Konrad works as a drone trainer. Yes, drones need to be trained. He's interested in learning about how Amentans teach people. A teacher would be a good match, though he's read enough that that's mainly orange.

Konrad likes sports! He likes artistic gymnastics – gymnastics in general is really popular in Zmavlimu'e – and fieldball, golf, and orienteering. Do Amentans have similar sports?

Konrad likes hiking and camping and survivalism. And not the popular version practiced in Zmavlimu'e where you get your drones to give you guided tours through the landscape and they prepare the camp for you ahead of time. He likes the kind where you do everything yourself.

The Imperial Ministry of Aliens will accept this and tell him to wait a jeftu.

He gets a match with an Anitami grey who has almost exactly the same interests as him! Here's his email address.

Great! Hello new person!

Hello!

Konlad doesn't teach, but he's a personal trainer sometimes. He has Litem as his jobname because he's a reservist. It's rather unusual for reservists to have Litem as their jobname, because they're not actively in the military, but he prefers it. He doesn't think he coaches or trains other people enough to have the coach or trainer jobnames. Yes, oranges do most teaching but that's teaching young people. Teaching more specialized stuff is within-caste, like yellow accountant school or purple culinary school or green university studies. The same with greys. Coaching in sports is grey.

Yes!! He has exactly the same interests, accounting for the differences in Amenta.

Konlad would love to go hiking in Zmavlimu'e. So much of Amenta is built up though. It's very difficult to find anywhere to like, explore nature in. Temperate nature, that is. Which is not rainforest or boreal landscape.

Konlad started learning Standard Imperial in the hopes that he might be able to come to Zmavlimu'e and visit or live there someday. His boyfriend is too!

They will continue talking. Konrad will learn Anitami. They use machine translation less and less. Konrad tries to talk in Anitami and Konlad in Standard Imperial.

Three jeftu later, and the Zmavli Imperium now has a tourist visa program with Anitam. Does Konrad want to visit?

Yes!

Can Konlad and his boyfriend host him, or should he get a hotel.

They have space.
