"Of course."

She takes a deep breath. "Okay. There's a point a ways this way, blanket up and we'll go." She pulls on some boots and wraps herself in a fur.

He tries fitting himself into human cold-weather clothes. 

It's blankets and not coats expressly to avoid sizing issues!

She picks up a sack of ash and a sponge and leads him down a slope.

At the bottom is -

It hurts to look at.

"Don't look right at it, you'll feel sick," she says. "That goes away, after. Do you know about the thing where you designate what the nothingness should take first, if you mess up a spell?"

"I know toes are conventional. How do you designate -"

"You put ash on parts, in order." She's missing a pinky toe, if he checks. "I can do it for you if you want to make sure you don't get any on your hands."

"- I think I'll chance it, actually, if that's okay with you -"

"You can start over, if you mess up, you just have to have done it right before you hook to the point." She gives him the sponge.

He meticulously designates body parts.

"Done?"

"Yeah."

"Okay. You're pretty sure you can avoid accidentally wanting to destroy things?"

"That can destroy them?"

"It's more like an impulse than an accident."

"I am confident I can avoid that."

"Okay. Now's the part where you have to look at it. And repeat after me."

He looks at it.

It's horrible.

"By fire I will burn and by death I will kill and by void I will annihilate," she recites.

He looks at the horrible thing. 

"By fire I will burn and by death I will kill and by void I will annihilate."

"I will erase. I will void. I will nullify. I will extinguish. That which is, I will cast here, and it will not."

He dutifully recites and wonders how they didn't realize that their magic system would eat the world.

"I destroy. I destroy. I destroy," she finishes.

"I destroy, I destroy, I destroy."

The disappearance point isn't horrible any more. It's still bizarre, but in a fascinating, inviting way, somewhere between scenery and puzzle.

He can tell Ranary is a mage, if he looks. She's invitingly puzzling in the same way.
