"Go here is come, go there is leave. Kobold okay if I leave now and come later? Mom will food and water."

He points at Melissa to clearly identify ''mom. 

She looks dubiously at the stranger.

"Hello. Scott says you need a home. This can be your home now."

This does not in fact make her any less dubious. More, actually.

"Okay."

"Kobold okay? If I ask where, I want to understand here or there, your home or my home. Where to go. If I ask why, I want to understand okay?"

"Okay." She takes a few seconds to think. "My home painful. Your home - more painful? less painful? No understand. I am painful you? I am painful mom? No understand. You are painful I? Mom are painful I? No understand. More more no understand, new, no see."

"My home no painful. I am no in pain. My mom is no in pain. Home is no painful. You are no painful to me, I want no be painful to you." 

She's still dubious, but less so. She shrugs. "Okay."

"If Scott say Scott want pick up kobold and kobold want understand, kobold can ask why. If Scott say am hungry but Scott say no want food, kobold can ask why. Understand?"

He leads her inside the house. 

She follows.

"I understand."

"Ask why, ask where. If kobold want understand or know new person, ask who. If want know then or now or later, ask when."

Okay, now she's confused. "Understand or no?"

"If I have food and water, I have food, I also have water. Yes or no, also know is understand now."

This language. "Okay."

"If I say 'yes', I say one yes. If I say 'yes yes' I say two yes."

Nod nod. "Scott need go?"

"No need go. Scott sleep and eat and drink and come and come here. I live here, is my home. Need go later maybe. Maybe is yes and or no."

"Okay. You say you go now."

"Now is now. Later is later. Less later is soon, more later is later. Now is now, soon is less later, later is more later. I will go soon, no now, and come later. Then I need go later maybe."

"Okay. One, two, more?"

Scott heads to the kitchen, keeping in sight of the kobold, and grabs two oranges.

He hands one to Melissa, who takes it, raising her eyebrows.

"This is my food, that is mom food," he says, pointing appropriately.

He offers his to the kobold.

She takes it, a bit hesitantly.

"That is kobold food, that is mom food. Understand?"

Nod, "okay."
