"Man, I'm going to feel so badly about myself if that turns out to be it." He pulls out a knife. "Lemme know if you'd rather die."

"Ooh, torture, scary. No one's ever done that before."

"So we should be clear that like - my first priority here is getting to beat you up a little bit because you tried to kill my slayer and I'm very angry about that, my second priority here is having the helpful people who are keeping you and your buddies locked up not get too mad to keep doing that, I guess technically on some level I care where your girlfriend is but, like, not very much.  I'm going to chop your fingers into salami and you're not going to tell me anything and then we'll both be happy, right? And then we'll go find your girl anyway because she can't have gone that far. And in the future you will leave Karen the fuck alone. Everything make more sense now?"

"Gettin' the picture, yeah."

"Great." He gets started on cathartic stabbing. It's not really enjoyable in the slightest but it does make something hurt a little less.

Spike's not really gonna be able to keep up the sarcastic commentary indefinitely, but he's also not going to tell anyone where Dru is.

They page through books. He takes notes on the ones he doesn't have. "Let us know if there are things we can help with, Wishbone -"

Well, I'm going to read these all myself eventually, but to speed things up now, we know that information about Spike and Drusilla will be in the journals from - I think it's 1976 and 1900? Within a decade of those numbers, anyway. Any information about their origins will obviously be earlier than that. And we have several books on particularly infamous vampires, though I'm afraid most of them aren't polite enough to include an index.

"All right. I'll see if I can find anything."

Woo, books.

"OK, here's something. - aw, it's depressing."

"It says Drusilla was a - well it doesn't say exactly where she comes from, but she was preparing to be a nun when the vampire Angelus killed her. It says in life he drove her insane - stalked her, tortured and killed everyone she loved, left her a shell of herself, turned her into a vampire, and then looks like he and his existing girlfriend kept her around to, uh, continue enjoying how thoroughly they'd destroyed her mind? Because, y'know, just torturing her to death the normal way wasn't depressing enough."

" - oh, and she has visions."

"- wow.

All right, we need to find her. Alex is trying, but not getting anywhere. Is that going to be in a book or should we start walking the sewers -"

"I think none of these books have been been written in the past three days."

"Well, she might have a known preference for, I don't know, abandoned churches or treehouses or something." Sigh. "Cities take a long time to search."

"I can read more stuff. There's nothing about it in this one, but hey, we have more."

Alex comes back a little later. "Are you looking for Drusilla?"

"She's probably not hiding between the pages but that's the top of our priority list, yes. Is the Bureau out searching?"

"They're checking the woods but it's going to take a very long time during which we could easily lose another forty people." He kicks a table.

"You break it you pay for it. Also, she's insane, that might make it harder for her to carry out murders inconspicuously."

"Tortured by vampires to the point of insanity while studying to be a nun. So it's just been happy fun times all around."

"Did Spike do that?"

"No, no, this was this other guy. Spike comes in later, and then the torturing-would-be-nuns-into-insanity vampires leave and Spike and Drusilla stay together for - at least one lifetime, anyway."

"Huh. Okay."
