"Oh, that's interesting. Useful, too."

"Yes. If we kidnap the kingdom of Laefair we can bring this world all sorts of fascinating modern conveniences!"

"Clearly this is my only incentive for kidnapping a kingdom. The modern conveniences."

"What else does one kidnap kingdoms for?"

"Hmm, I don't know. Morality, probably. But who has that?"

"Us, apparently."

She is not allowed to kiss him, she is not. He agreed with her about feeling conflicted about it.

"So what other modern conveniences does your world have?"

"Hmm... if you don't have picture-taking I imagine you don't have TV... crystal balls, magic mirrors?"

She shakes her head. "No. What do those do?"

"Well, to begin with, they're for scrying and divination and sometimes communication. But then someone had the bright idea that if you have an artifact for looking at things with, you could create things for it to look at, and arrange for them to be very very easy for everyone to find and make more of, and then instead of just being able to use your magic mirror to talk to a friend you know who also has a magic mirror, you can use your crystal ball to gaze the aethernet and see words and images put there by anyone else who has access to a crystal ball, and respond to them and add creations of your own. The aethernet is sort of like a world-spanning cross between a library and a conversation. It's frankly pretty amazing."

She takes a minute to envision this.

"It sounds it," she agrees sincerely. "And also I want one."

"I love it so much!"

"It sounds pretty great."

"It's better than it sounds."

She giggles, and nods, and loves him.

Conversation is easy with Milan. Natural, open, honest, effortless. He's endlessly charming, supportive, and reasonable. He's smart, funny, and noble, and it feels utterly, completely normal to love him. The only hiccups in it are from the love potion itself, not anything he does, not how her preferences interact with him.

Which is why it's increasingly frustrating that she still hasn't snapped out of the love potion's effects. She feels that by all rights, she should have. What's missing? What even is there to miss, he's just obviously perfect for her. She desperately wants to just fall in love with him properly on his own merits, they'd be so great together, why isn't she in love already? It's becoming increasingly more ridiculous as the day carries on, as their comfortable camaraderie continues with their charming banter. Eventually, when the sky begins to change colors and they land to sleep and avoid being seen from the ground, she prods her magic and asks if it thinks the love potion's effect is in itself preventing it from breaking despite her actual love for him.

It... doesn't think so. Certainly, being attached to the person she's trying to fall in non-liquid love with makes it kind of tricky, but it shouldn't eliminate the possibility entirely. If she can fall in love with him, then it will work. The trouble's in managing it.

It's frustrating. She's frustrated. She grumpily cuddles the object of her liquid love affections for comfort because seriously, what is missing, and eventually she sleeps.

Milan politely doesn't ask about the grumpiness of the cuddles. He gets to sleep fairly quickly.

That just makes him even more perfect, why doesn't she love him?

The next morning, she pensively props herself up to peer at him, one arm draped over him comfortably. Trying to understand.

Cozy sleeping Milan has no response to this.

She's not upset with him, that would just be completely insane. Really, she's not even upset with herself, not for not being in love. She's upset for not understanding why. It doesn't make sense. It's like staring at a nearly complete puzzle, with only the final piece missing, except she can't find it.

Not that she doesn't try.

Yaaaaaawn.

"G'morning."

"Good morning," she murmurs, with perfectly natural adoration, and what is missing augh.

She sighs, and returns to her most pleasant coping method. Snuggles.

Snuggles. Snuggles are good. Snuggles and maybe breakfast?

Oh, yes, breakfast. Once reminded of that she will definitely get to making sure they're both fed.

"... I don't know what I'm missing," she mumbles eventually, frustrated.
