Linyabel doesn't either!

"Figures. So there's no good reason for me to sleep. I could do things with you during the day and just work on the necklaces while you're sleeping. It'll take about five months that way though because you can't go into and out of top acceleration that often. What are we planning to do if we don't find either peal anytime soon?"

"The three strategies you mentioned, making a lot of money to do things with or founding a consortium or making a nice place for people to immigrate to, do they all work pretty okay when people try them and we should go with whichever is easy here?"

"Yeah, they all go okay, or combinations of all three."

"Okay. It would be pretty hard to do the immigration one because traveling around takes a very long time and most people can't afford it and there are so many billions of people that it's not realistic to teleport them even if we teach a bunch of people to teleport, since it takes you so long to make necklaces that let you teleport and there are so many people. And it would be pretty hard to get taken seriously if we did the consortium thing because we are all children. But if you can make ansibles we can be richer than any six planets in a year."

"Ooooh. Okay, let's test the ansibles thing. ...also lightleapers can get anywhere in five days, they work by" - handwave - "pinching the universe and distance doesn't matter."

"Those work in all the universes?"

"All the ones that run on physics. So do warp engines but those require antimatter, I can't reproduce them, z-space doesn't because it's a dimension adjacent to Cube, no one else independently invented FTL."

"Well, I think we'd want to be kind of careful about that because sometimes places get into wars and being able to get anywhere in five days would be a huge deal there - ansibles would be too but I think it would do more good than harm."

"Okay." He tries to make an ansible as Pen described them.

Oh look an ansible.

"You might have to make them different to plugging them in to stuff here."

"Yeah probably, no worlds that independently invented computers have compatible ones. Linyabel, where's somewhere far from here I could teleport so we could check that they're faster than light communications..."

"It doesn't have to have air or anything?"

"Nope, probably better that it doesn't so there's no chance of running into people..."

She pulls up a picture of a neighboring galaxy.

"Okay...Pen, how do we use these to actually communicate -"

"...um, Jane do it. Is a way doing it without Jane but dunno computers so well. Jarvises do it too? And computers having them on Peace... Peace where they invented."

...he tries for the kinds of ansibles they have on Peace.

Peace is not adjacent.

Sigh. All the ansibles Pen recalls having seen?

Mostly she's seen Janegems, which pretty much look like, uh, gems, they just have ansible bits and sensors in them very small and enough computer for Jane to eat up in the crystal structure. Pen's never been to Peace. Jarvis ansibles look like this?

He tries one of those.

Linya takes it and investigates the connectors coming off it and calls up an electrical engineering book on her computer and starts asking for stuff. It takes her hours and what winds up being quite a heap of stuff, but after that she has a way to get data through it.

So he pops to the adjacent galaxy and sends data through it to check whether it's all instantaneous communications.
