But what happened to her father.

Neither letters nor news makes this clear.

"Do we need to go back?"

"When I've already made the mistake of marrying you? No, that wouldn't help at all."

Lucette really doesn't have emotional capacity going spare right now, Annie can sleep in a different room if she's going to sulk like that.

If that's what Lucette wants.

It is, and that means it's what Annie wants too.

Lucette's grandfather has allies, and his allies are loyal and empowered and they demand his daughter returned. When Duke Lockworth refuses they're willing to back up that demand with force.

The Duke also has allies. Not enough to fend off the surprise attack, but enough to escape it and prepare reprisals.

Lucette would like to send money to support the war effort. Do they have any money yet, Annie?

Yes, she's been able to get a few people to pay her for healing by now.

That's hardly anything. Why won't the hospital pay her more?

Most of the people who need it are poor, because they're commoners, because empowered don't get hurt much, and also she's been buying groceries and stuff.

If Annie can't find a way to get people to pay more for her power then she can at least rely on her power to handle her hunger, instead of spending money on groceries for herself.

"...I don't actually know if it can do that."

"Well, that doesn't mean you can't find out."

"...if you say so."

She does, and Annie does what she says. It's the only good thing about her, really.

The fight between nobles escalates fast, with the entire balance of the empowered world thrown into question. At first, it's a skirmish, then it's a civil war, then someone levels Paris to hobble France before they can join the opposing side. All the attack really does is make the French angrier. And kill tens of thousands of commoners, not that either side seems to care.

Lucette said they shouldn't go back and Annie doesn't make the mistake of asking twice.

That's good, because Lucette is dealing with enough. Too much, really. And she can't do anything about it. With all her strength, she's useless. She puts her hand through the wall out of frustration with Prussia's first attack on London.

...well, then they're going to have a hole in the wall unless Lucette wants to budget to have it fixed. Annie doesn't say anything about it.

When Belgium burns Lucette sees red. She can't wreck the wall anymore without risking structural damage, but there's one thing in their apartment that can put herself back together if she's hurt.

If that's what Lucette wants.

It is.

And it is again, when the German countryside is torn up by a twister empowered, when a wild demon manifests in the middle of Rome, and when her mother dies in childbirth.
