"Fair enough," says Maurabel, reverting to talking out loud. "Well, I hope that helps, I'll see if I can think of anything else but I don't know anything about your magic - hm - I'm going to go check out Penumbra."

"Mmm."

Jisa sits on the floor and sketches out some more notes on what she thinks she did the first time.

Maurabel comes back with Penumbra. Neither of them says anything. Maurabel gives Penumbra some bread.

"All right," Jisa says eventually, out loud again. "Should I try to," :summon: "an elemental from my world? See if it works? I can translate."

"Is this dangerous or anything?"

"No, it–" Jisa stops. Makes herself actually think. "Almost never? I can try to call one by name. They might not come but it means only a friendly one I know would hear me."

"When it's dangerous, what's the danger?"

"...They can do magic of their plane. A fire elemental could start a fire." :By accident or on purpose: she adds, since she doesn't remember the words for either 'accident' or 'on purpose'. "Earth elementals are the most safe and I know lots. You could get a very strong one who had bad," :experiences: "with other mage schools, I guess. If I call one I know likes me then I don't see any danger." She frowns. "Unless this world is different somehow."

"What kind are you going to get, I can go check out another local elemental for defense."

"I was thinking I could get a khamsin. Little earth elemental, not very strong. Mostly they see plants growing, things like that. They can lift rocks? Small rocks."

"I probably have enough of my own Earth to handle that."

Nod. "All right. Umm, do you have..." Damn it what's the word, she knows this one but she's blanking on it. :Salt:

:...yes, why?:

"I need it for the magic."

:How much? It's money - I mean, in the city we can mostly use coins because the mayor enforces a law against using magic for it, but that'll crack any day, and salt's one of the things accepted widely:

:...Oh, hmm. I can use dirt instead? It needs to be multiple different kinds of dirt from different places or sources though:

:How different?:

:Oh, um, I haven't...really tested it...? I've used red clay and white clay and that really black garden loam and sand, they were all from different towns but I'm not sure the second part matters:

:Can you get that or should I go?:

:...I can go get it. Wood, you wanna come?:

:Sure: says Wood. :I can make you a basket:

:Thanks! Ooh, can I watch you do it?:

:Sure: he says. After they've gone far enough to find a tree that nobody seems to be watching, he pulls a branch off it - it comes free with nothing but a smooth barkless oval marking its absence - and forms it into a large thin bowl with several separate divots to hold all the kinds of earth she'll want.

:Whoa!: Jisa is watching intently with mage-sight as well as her eyes; what does it look like magically speaking?

It looks sort of like the Velgarth magic she's familiar with, energy flowing from Wood and interacting with the tree and the bark, shaping it, but there's some obscurely different flavour to it.
