"I mean, I'm not usually reading your mind."

That is, she supposes, reasonable. "...you must have good control?"

"Yeah, I haven't read anyone's mind by accident in years."

"Oh," she says quietly. She wishes her control was that good. She snuggles slightly into Edie.

Edie snuggles back.

"I had to use my power to get that kind of control. If I'd been taught to repress it I'd still be leaking all over the place."

"...I- does that- help?"

(Except, she can't, she can't, she's not supposed to.)

"Yeah. It does."

"Oh."

Maybe that would help. But she can'tcan'tcan't.

"...No one's going to make you. But--it would be nice if you felt like you could, someday."

"I- m'sorry," she says into Edie's shoulder. "I- they. Said it was wrong. And that I shouldn't, and I can't." (She can't help but think she'll get hurt if she does, she always did before, even when she was trying not to.)

"I know. They were wrong, wrong like they were wrong about your baby being a person, but there's no hurry. You take whatever pace you need to."

She leans against Edie and continues to try and figure out how this is real, and how she ever got this. (And how lucky she is that Edie, who apparently didn't accidentally read minds, somehow managed to find her, and help her, and save her.)

Edie hugs her.

"Fire isn't a bad thing, you know. Candles are fire. Cozy hearths are fire. Lots and lots and lots of good things are fire."

She'd...never. Thought. About that. It had always been...

"Hellfire," she mumbles. "I- they. That's what they always said. That it was a curse from the Devil."

"Well, it's not. It's as natural as your eyes or your hands, and as much a part of you."

She's quiet for a moment. "I- I think I want to believe that?" she says eventually (because not being wrong would be so nice). "I just- it's."

"Yeah. I know."

Emily comes walking up a moment later, a seamless metal box hovering beside her. "Hi."

Blaze flinches a tiny bit, but it doesn't seem to be because she's actually scared. "Hi?" she replies.

"I come bearing food." The box opens and unfolds to reveal food.

Blaze watches in amazement and awe. "Thank you," she says quietly, and then pauses. "I- that's. Incredible?" She gestures at the box. (She's not entirely sure she's supposed to comment on these things.)

"Thanks!"

She smiles shyly at Emily and hesitantly reaches for the food.

Emily nudges it a little closer.

She eats a little slower here, doesn't seem quite as concerned about someone trying to steal it from her (even if she's fairly sure she couldn't do anything if Emily tried). She also seems to manage to eat a little more than she has down in the cafeteria.
