"Okay."

So she leaves and gets her crying out, quietly, in the shower.  She braids one pigtail's worth of hair before realizing that she might need it loose to cover her face some more later, and anyway, she can't find a hairtie.  So she undoes that before she comes back out.

Haru is in progress on Japanese Harry Potter again.

She would also like to spend some quiet time reading; that sounds great.  She will take notes on the illustrated vocabulary guide for little children that she got at the library.

The next interruption is Ren informing Kennedy that she is supposed to take her in for a checkup. (She says this in Japanese first but then repeats herself in English, since it needs to be understood.)

"Ummmmm.  What will happen there?"  She doesn't try for Japanese.

"I'm not sure, I've never been to the doctor in Japan myself yet, Haru and I got all our Japan-specific vaccinations back in Canada; but I can stay with you the whole time and explain anything that seems strange."

"What are those?"

"Vaccines are..." She is here distracted by Jisho.

"Vaccines are so you don't get sick. Do you know about the..." He katakanifies the phrase rather than look it up, "imyun shisuten, everybody does that Mama it counts as immersion -"

"...Ummm.  Immune system?"

Nod nod.

"...Yes, I know what that is."

"A vaccine teaches a disease to the immune system," says Haru.

"How?"

"It has dead..." Jisho... "germs. The immune system practices with the dead germs."

"...Okay...."

"It hurts a little bit, because the dead germs go under your..." Jisho, "skin, but only a little bit."

"How do they get there?"

"With a needle." Then like Ren was doing he translates himself: "Needle."

"- That seems like it would be bad?"

"It hurts a little bit."

"...No, it seems like it would be bad.  Like I don't think it would work on me."

Haru and Ren look at each other.

"What do you remember doing about your immune system?" Haru asks after a silence.

"Ummmmm.  You don't really have to do anything about it back home, except eat the correct things so it has enough resources to do its work with.  And if that's not enough, you just go to a crystal healer."
